Ranking EPL Top Scorers Week 2: Luis Suarez, Manchester City Trio and Shane Long
In the second part of our weekly look at the players troubling the statisticians of the Premier League, six new players have now joined the leader after the first round of matches, one them being Sergio 'Kun' Aguero, with two strikes in as many matches.
Though it is still very early to begin looking at who will be up there come the end of the season, several attackers will be pleased with their form and their contributions firing for their teams at a rate of a goal a game.
We take a look today at the performances of players who have notched twice already, as well as doling out the much-coveted "Goal of the Week" award!
Kun Aguero (Manchester City)
1 of 8After a two-goal substitute appearance on his debut last week, Kun Aguero gave another encouraging display though he failed to add to his tally despite two presentable chances which he spurned.
Starting a league match in City colours for the first time, Aguero was replaced during the second half by compatriot Carlos Tevez.
Luis Suarez (Liverpool)
2 of 8After winning and missing a penalty before scoring the opening goal for Liverpool on the first day of the season, it was already clear that Luis Suarez was going to have another eventful season for the Reds.
Kenny Dalglish sprung a surprise by not including the Uruguayan in the starting 11 against Arsenal and it wasn't until the double-introduction of Suarez and Raul Meireles that Liverpool opened the scoring. Both players were involved in both goals in Liverpool's 2-0 win, the second of which was prodded into the empty net by Suarez from Meireles' pass.
Shane Long (West Brom)
3 of 8Shane Long is perhaps the biggest achiever on the list at present after scoring two goals in two games for his new club and in his first season back in the Premier League. His goals have come against two big sides in Manchester United and Chelsea.
Arguably two of the most difficult defences he will come up against this season, Long added to his account against the Blues after robbing centre-back Alex of the ball, racing towards goal and beating Hilario with a cool finish.
David Silva (Manchester City)
4 of 8Adding to his opening game strike against Swansea City, Silva gave an impressive performance and scored his second goal against Bolton Wanderers.
One of the more fortuitous goals we saw this weekend, Silva struck from the edge of the area with his favoured left foot and, though it was hit well enough, the ball flew almost straight at the goalkeeper.
However, Jaaskelainen made an error of judgement on the flight of the ball and allowed it to bounce in front of him and into the net past his right boot.
Ivan Klasnic (Bolton Wanderers)
5 of 8A goal in the 4-0 drubbing of QPR was added to with a fine strike against Manchester City by Ivan Klasnic, spinning and firing a fine left-footed effort past Joe Hart after Martin Petrov's cross from the left.
His goal was to no avail this week though, as Bolton slipped to a 3-2 reversal.
Edin Dzeko (Manchester City)
6 of 8After opening the scoring against Swansea last week Dzeko made it two with a rather more well-taken goal against Bolton.
A lofted ball over the top was well chased-down by the Bosnian who held off the challenge of Zat Knight to slide the ball right-footed past the goalkeeper.
This turned out to be the match-winning goal for Manchester City.
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
7 of 8Wayne Rooney scored his second of the season against Tottenham on Monday night, with the aid of his newly hair-covered head.
What Michael Dawson attempted to stop Rooney can only be speculated, but Rooney rounded off a good night's work for the Red Devils as he headed home to score the third goal late on.
Goal of the Week: Gareth Barry (Manchester City)
8 of 8Third place: Anderson (Manchester United).
A classy one-two inside the area with forward Danny Welbeck; Anderson initially gave the ball and, after a lovely back-heeled pass from Welbeck, ran onto the return to calmly stroke past Brad Friedel left-footed into the corner of the net.
Second place: Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa)
Receiving the ball outside the left edge of the Blackburn penalty area, Agbonlahor cut inside, took on his defender and curled the ball into the far side of the goal past Paul Robinson, which set his side on its way to a 3-1 victory.
First place: Gareth Barry (Manchester City)
Collecting a corner 25 yards from goal, Barry took one touch to control the ball towards the Bolton penalty area before letting it fly with a left-foot rocket into the top right corner of Jussi Jaaskelainen's goal, extending Manchester City's lead.
