Kevin Durant: Re-Imagining the OKC Thunder Superstar in Basketball Movies

Ethan NorofJun 7, 2018

Kevin Durant is reportedly on the verge of agreeing to star in an upcoming basketball-themed movie for Warner Bros. according to The Oklahoman.

Although the film is yet to have an official name, the news served as an inspirational jumping off point as to what previous basketball flicks Durant would've made better.

In a summer that has belonged to K.D. with one dominating performance after another, it's only natural that he begins a transition to the silver screen to even further amass his national audience.

13. Slam Dunk Ernest

Re-Name: Slam Dunk Kevin

For a movie that was released direct-to-video, this one actually could have been a lot worse.

And let's be real: Durant would've thrived in a role that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was rather lackluster in, as I've never been a big fan of his acting skills.

While we'd still have to watch Ernest play basketball, at least we'd simultaneously get to see Durant on the court, and that's what everyone has been eager to see since he came into the league.

12. The 6th Man

Re-Name: Durant's the Man

A categorical bomb any way one slices it, this movie barely beat out its production costs when it hit the box office.

Although Durant would need a co-star in this one, he and his brother Tony could form a fearsome basketball playing combination that would star at their college of choice.

They'd certainly be more believable than Marlon Wayans and Kadeem Hardison as basketball players.

11. Heaven Is a Playground

Re-Name: Heaven Is a Playground

No, that's not a typo. There is no re-name necessary for this one as this title echoes Durant's sentiments pretty clearly.

Throughout the summer, Durant has said that he just wants to keep playing basketball, and has taken his game to several playgrounds in an effort to prove his point.

I believe it's safe to say that he's shown what he's done exactly that.

10. Teen Wolf

Re-Name: K.D. the Wolf

Granted that this one would probably need the help of some special effects as Durant isn't exactly riddled with body hair, but this is one role that he could likely do well.

With the move to werewolf, Durant would be even more feared on the hardwood than normally, and that's certainly a scary sight to imagine.

9. Love & Basketball

Re-Name: Love & Basketball

When a title is as perfect as this, one simply can't change it for the sake of inserting Durant's name into the title.

This was a classic movie and one of the most underrated gems in the silver screen sphere, but Durant's presence would've made it a lot more believable than Omar Epps as a player.

I'm not taking anything away from Epps' acting game, as that was on point. As for his hoops game, well, that's a different story.

8. Like Mike

6 of 13

Re-Name: Durant Can Be Like Mike

When "Like Mike" was released with Lil' Bow Wow as the film's star in 2002, Durant was just 13 years old.

Bow Wow, born in 1987, is actually more than a full year older than Durant.

Let's just say that it would've been more plausible if Durant was was cast in the role rather than someone in hip-hop.

Just imagine a young Durant in the same feature film as the NBA players featured in the background of the film's poster.

An instant classic would be in store.

7. Celtic Pride

7 of 13

Re-Name: Thunder Pride

The Wayans brothers might enjoy playing the role of basketball player in movies, but they were never really convincing in the role.

Celtic Pride is a classic comedy, and with the Thunder enjoying a turnaround in the franchise and rising rapidly to the forefront of the Western Conference, the timing seems almost too perfect to have Durant star in a movie about other club's pulling out all of the stops to slow him down.

6. Semi-Pro

8 of 13

Re-Name: Tropic Thunder

This re-name is actually a movie in its own right, but oddly enough, it seems more appropriate for a Durant-themed film than it ever did for Ben Stiller and co.

Not only was the team's name the "Tropics", but Durant would've taken to the role that Andre Benjamin played flawlessly and likely could've delivered even more impressive moves on the hardwood.

5. White Men Can't Jump

9 of 13

Re-Name: White Man Can't Jump

Another classic that needs no re-naming, as Durant would undoubtedly leap over Wesley Snips' performance as a street baller.

Could you imagine Durant laying it on the line in 2-on-2 matchups to win thousands of dollars?

Well, not if he had an NBA paycheck to fall back on, but he would make for an interesting addition to the film that could've made it a lot better.

4. Blue Chips

10 of 13

Re-Name: Blue Chips

The term Blue Chips is given to those players that are on track to be the brightest stars of the future, and Durant was a top-billed prospect coming out of school.

Despite the fact that he was a talented prospect, Durant was passed over for Greg Oden in their draft class, and the Blazers have really been kicking themselves in an effort to compete as a result prior to last season.

3. The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh

11 of 13

Re-Name: Durantula That Saved Oklahoma City

Prior to Durant being drafted, the franchise was toiling in mediocrity and faced a lot of uncertainty.

While Seattle fans will likely be peeved with the choice to move the team out of the city forever (or at least until there is a new team there), Durant undoubtedly saved Oklahoma City and made them extraordinarily basketball relevant in a big way.

2. Space Jam

12 of 13

Re-Name: The Extraterrestrial Assault

Durant's game is clearly from beyond this world, but Space Jam belongs solely to His Airness and those classic sneakers.

While the movie could've definitely been more entertaining with Durant's fresh face at the helm rather than Jordan's, it's awfully tough to make changes to one of the most classic films ever made.

1. He Got Game

13 of 13

Re-Name: He's Still Got Game

Rather than a re-make of the top movie on this list, it would only be appropriate for Durant to be the second coming of Jesus Shuttlesworth.

Granted that he might have to get a little work done in an effort to look more like Ray Allen, this is undoubtedly one film that we all want to see get made in a very big way.
