Fantasy Football: Week 10 Leftovers

Collin HagerNov 11, 2008
So, I'm in a survivor pool. I feel like you need to know these things. We're 10 weeks into the season and there are four of us left out of 80. This week, I grabbed Miami against Seattle, figuring it would be an easy win. Much harder than it should have been, but still a win. The other guys went with Carolina, San Diego, and Arizona.
This morning, I'm bitter. Why? I feel there should only be two teams left. I'd like to thank Mike Martz for some fantastic play calling to end the game and Kansas City for choking that game away against San Diego.

Truth is, it doesn't have as much to do with the "pride" for the winner as much as it has to do with the fact I'm tired of trying to pick these games. I've never been in a survivor league this long. I feel I'm tempting fate here.
Anyway, let's get to the leftovers from Week 10.
Fantasy Up
  1. Brady Quinn- Say what you will about his first time out, but the Browns' quarterback showed he belongs in the league. Quinn has some tough matchups, especially come playoff time, but should be looked at in deeper leagues to provide insurance and as a definite add in any keeper format where you'd be able to hold on to him.
  2. DeAngelo Williams - Williams had one of his best rushing days of the season against the Raiders. Yes, it was Oakland, and we understand they couldn't stop anyone running the football. Still, with Stewart's health a question, Williams is the ball carrier of choice and looked very good doing it.
  3. Maurice Jones-Drew - This is the game owners have been waiting for. Sure, he accounted for fewer rushing yards than Taylor, but he made up for it with three touchdowns. To be certain, the road against Tennessee won't be as easy as the one taken against Detroit, but confidence builds, regardless of the opponent.
  4. Kevin Smith - The single bright spot for the Lions. Smith rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown against the Jaguars and continues to find the end zone with regularity. He should be added in most formats and looked at as a flex play.
  5. Ted Ginn, Jr. - He caught his first touchdown pass of the season and continues to return kicks as well. Ginn has the tools and is being given the chance to showcase himself with a quarterback that knows how to get him the football. Have to like his schedule going forward, too.

Fantasy Down

  1. Jamaal Charles - He has an ankle injury, and Larry Johnson is likely back in the mix more as we had down the final stretch of the season. Charles could still be something special, but his value likely remains as a handcuff to Johnson, unfortunately.
  2. Ronnie Brown - He hasn't had many solid games of late, and the Wildcat isn't exploiting his talents anymore. With Williams splitting carries, and Pennington developing in the offense with talented young receivers, Brown's touches and yards are becoming more limited.
  3. Steve Smith- He drew the top corner in Oakland, then had a quarterback that couldn't get him the ball. Smith draws Detroit this week, which seems to cure all ills, but saying that he was disappointing in this week's matchup is an understatement.
  4. Greg Jennings - Where was Aaron Rodgers this week? Talk about an ugly game for the entire Green Bay passing attack. Rodgers has thrown just one touchdown pass since Week Eight, making this offense fantasy inept.
  5. Jake Delhomme - This might be beating a dead horse, but I'm not against that. Delhomme's accuracy has always been a problem, but he looked overly awful against a secondary that he should have been able to attack. His interceptions were inexcusable.

I Don't Trust the Performance of...

...borderline tight ends, Dustin Keller and Daniel Graham. Don't go out of your way to add these guys or any tight end. What this season continues to show is that there are very few elite tight ends that perform every week.

Chris Cooley has struggled, Todd Heap has struggled, and the top of the points leaderboard at this position has changed nearly every week. Keller was a red-zone target for Favre, but he has largely been ignored this season in the Jets' offense.

Graham saw passes more because Scheffler continues to struggle with a groin injury and Cutler was able to work the sidelines early against the Browns. I don't buy either of these two repeating performances in Week 11.

I'm Most Concerned About...

...more quarterbacks: Trent Edwards and Aaron Rodgers. Last week, I called out Cutler and got a solid performance, but Big Ben disappointed. Think I can go 1-for-2 this week?

Rodgers has thrown just one touchdown since Week Eight. His schedule gets slightly more friendly, as the Bears, Saints, and Panthers can all be beaten through the air. He had better show that against Chicago this Sunday. Especially after Kerry Collins nearly racked up 300 yards against them.

Trent Edwards has more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (two) since Week Eight. His schedule doesn't necessarily get easy, as the AFC East is simply beating up on each other. Two or three of his remaining opponents will be fine matchups, but he's quickly losing the shine that we saw earlier in the season.

It's compounded by the lack of running game in Buffalo. Either it's playcalling, or Lynch and Jackson are that bad. No one has had a 100-yard game for the Bills this season at running back.

Workin' the Wire

  • Mark Bradley and Tyler Thigpen- To quote Matthew Berry, "just because it's obvious doesn't make it not true." Thigpen and Bradley have been great surprises, and neither are widely owned enough. With plenty of 12-team leagues out there, these guys should be on rosters.
  • Bo Scaife - Just 60 percent owned?? Scaife is Collins' favorite target outside of Justin Gage. With the Titans proving that they are willing to throw the football, Scaife should have better value moving forward.
  • BenJarvus Green-Ellis - He's the man in New England, and is coming off a 105-yard day against the Bills. The going might be tougher against the Jets, but he is a true number-one back.
  • Matt Cassel- Cassel continues to improve and should be owned in 12-team formats. The fact he isn't a matchup play or backup for teams surprises me. Being only 30 percent owned doesn't add up. Not when he draws some easier secondaries the rest of the way. And Belichick doesn't lose to teams twice in the same season.
  • Ted Ginn - As mentioned above, he's showcasing his talents. In leagues that count return yards, Ginn provides even more value. It's like Leon Washington in New York.
