It Just Ain't So Nick! LSU's Saban Hatred Is Overhyped

Joe ZornNov 10, 2008

I've had enough!

Now that the hyped LSU vs. Nick Saban game is over, I just have to have my say.

I just don't like it that Nick Saban left LSU for Miami after the 2005 season ended. The way he left saddened or angered many fans, but most understood his hunger to try out the NFL. Most wished him well, and many wanted him back...instead of Les Miles...at the time.

I have never been a LES Miles hater. He's our coach and has proven his worthiness with his accomplishments. He's proven to be as good as or better than his predecessor. (No fiery sniper shots required here. It's just an opinion, based on his productivity on the field, and everyone is entitled to opinions.)

I need to say, I REALLY was bothered when Saban decided to take the Alabama job—our bitter enemy. We really enjoyed that Alabama has been subpar the past few years on the field...certainly not up to Bear Bryant's standards!

But I did NOT feel betrayed by Nick. He is just a man, a very good coach and a very special person.

Many of the younger fans do show a bit of immaturity in their hatred for Nick. I wondered if those folks really know what Nick did for LSU.

He followed coaches like Jerry Stovall, Mike Archer, and Gerry DiNardo. These coaches represented the worst of the LSU years. Whether or not the blame was all theirs is debatable. Probably not in most cases, but Nick Saban was able to reverse this slide and build a national championship team in just four years.

For the most part, this hatred for Saban is very overhyped by media. They'll write or say whatever it takes to make their printed word noticed, whatever they feel the public wants to hear.

Truth in journalism is not really all that important to media folks, whether written or broadcasted. They know that many fans are wearing the blinders of fanaticism. These fans feed on this kind of yellow journalism—a little bit of history embedded in a mountain of pure idiocy.

Three names that will forever remain etched in LSU football legacy are the National Championship coaches: Paul Dietzel, Nick Saban, and Les Miles.

No matter where they go/went, no matter what job they have/had after leaving LSU, they'll take what they learn at LSU and teach those standards and morals to other young men in other areas.

If Coach Miles and Coach Saban's careers are as successful and respected as Coach Dietzel's career was until his retirement, then their stay at LSU has served us well.

They were/are a credit to our University. The largest number of fans knows and feels this sentiment.

Thank you Coach Dietzel. Thank you Coach Saban. Keep it up Coach Miles.
