Calm Down Frank!
I wish Chelsea players would just learn from past mistakes, particularly where talking to the press is concerned.
Yes, we’re top of the table and yes, we’ve got a minimal lead over Manchester United, but did Frank Lampard really have to point it out in the press? Why can’t our players just concentrate quietly on their job and do their talking on the pitch?
I just don’t get it.
The last two seasons we had Michael Essien’s saying with "all certainty" that Chelsea would take the title—it didn’t happen. And last season it was the Chelsea captain who made a point of telling the press how difficult United would find it coming back from a five point deficit—guess what? It weren’t that difficult at all as it turned out.
So, to hear Lampard coming out with his opinion on United’s start to this campaign just makes me want to headbutt the nearest wall to be honest. Lampard says:
“It is a nice gap for us. It is far from over, but in the last two years it’s been the other way round. We’ve been five points behind them (Manchester United) and it is not easy. When you are chasing, you really can’t afford to lose games. You have to remember Liverpool are neck and neck with us. But Man United and Arsenal, who are always big contenders, are those few points behind.”
Now, whilst I don’t think he’s actually making any predictions and he’s certainly not writing anyone off—even if the fact that he barely acknowledges Liverpool made me laugh—he’s just coming off as a little too smug when we’re not even in any position to be.
Besides, we might well be sitting at the top of the table courtesy of having won all six of our away games so far, but that has to be looked at in the context of who those games have been against. None of our away games have been against the "big clubs" and at home we’ve managed only a point from six in our games against Liverpool and United.
United, on the other hand, are still safe in the knowledge that they’ve got their away games against all of the top three out of the way already, whilst Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have yet to face their trips to Old Trafford.
In other words, it’s still only November Frank, calm yourself down a bit.
