Rex Grossman: The Washington Redskins Are Overlooked; Who Asked Mighty Mouse?

Jeff NowakJun 7, 2018

It isn't uncommon for an athlete to make bold statements to try to hype up his team. Vocal players like Terrell Owens or the Shaquille O'Neal's of the world have been doing that for years.

To hear that coming from a guy who is not even a definite starter on his own team in Rex Grossman is borderline comical.

"We don't mind being the sleepers right now," said Grossman in an interview with ESPN. "When it's all said and done I really feel like this team's gonna win the [NFC] East."

Well Rex, let me be the first to tell you: the Redskins as a team aren't necessarily being overlooked, you are being overlooked.

It would be too easy to make the joke that we all know Grossman is there, and his meager build is simply being dwarfed and hidden behind his offensive line. But the real reason is because no one really believes Grossman can quarterback another NFL team to success.

I hear the UFL is looking for QBs.

This is a guy who in his only full year of starting in 2006 with the Chicago Bears ran his team to a Super Bowl appearance. In doing so, he had one of the most unimpressive statistical years for a quarterback in NFL history. He threw for 3,192 yards and 23 touchdowns—not horrible. The fact that he paced those TDs with almost the same amount of interceptions (20) is simply horrid. Grossman is also the reason Peyton Manning catches flak for winning his only Super Bowl against a glorified backup.

The only player in recent history Grossman can relate to is Trent Dilfer, who actually won the Super Bowl in 2000—in a complete blowout, I might add—and had 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over his 11 games for the Baltimore Ravens. Dilfer did not play for the Ravens the following year.

If the Redskins look at Grossman's history, they should decide to start John Beck regardless of any preseason performances. Even in that case, the Redskins will not compete in the NFC East. If they wanted to move cross country and play on the West Coast they could probably beat Seattle and St. Louis, but it is not sane to believe they can compete with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and the I-own-the-world Philadelphia Eagles.

It is not that no one thinks you can compete, Rex, it is that everyone knows you can't compete.

Under the radar is not synonymous with irrelevance. You can say vertically-challenged all you want buddy, but in the end you're just going to come up short, and everyone knows it.
