Sioux Falls Washington Defeats O'Gorman; Headed to Second Straight Title Game
Led by a stout defense and the arm of senior quarterback Brett Grevlos, the Washington Warriors defeated their crosstown rivals, the O'Gorman Knights, to advance to their second straight state title appearance.
The defeat of O'Gorman is a good omen for the Warriors, as the team that has defeated the mighty Knights the past three seasons has gone on to win the title game.
Washington will face its other long-time nemesis Sioux Falls Lincoln at the Dakotadome next Saturday night.
Grevlos started the Warriors off with a touchdown strike to fellow Senior Quentin McMartin, who fought off three Knights en route to the end zone.
After a back-and-forth defensive bout, the game went into halftime tied at seven apeice. But the Warriors wasted no time taking their lead right back.
Running back Sam Hoskins capped off a third-quarter drive with a nice diving touchdown run. O'Gorman fired back with a long touchdown pass to star receiver/running back Phil Wright.
The Warriors got a big defensive stop in the fourth quarter in the form of a Brandon Mohr interception that was returned into O'Gorman's red zone. Washington sophomore standout Matt Hermanson finished what Mohr started and punched it in from five yards out.
With their season on the line, the Knights had to do something they weren't used to doing: throw.
Knight quarterback Tommy Viger threw a pass that resulted in a brilliant one-handed catch...by Warrior junior Mohr.
Washington will need a lot of defense and the A-game of Grevlos to defeat red-hot Lincoln. Grevlos has 24 touchdowns so far this season, and he gives the Warriors a lot of options at the quarterback position.
Head Coach Brian Hermanson will undoubtedly have his team well prepared for the Title game, and I think the Warriors will be able to stitch 2009 in the championship banner.
