Michael Owen Heading for Stamford Bridge?

TheChelseaBlog.orgNov 8, 2008
Chelsea’s goal difference has seen a significant improvement this season, with goals coming from all over the pitch. However, there have still been questions raised when it comes to an out-and-out striker.
Didier Drogba has spent the majority of the season out injured so far, and still appears a long way short of fitness and whilst Nicolas Anelka might well have scored a hat-trick last week, his form seems a little up and down to say the least and he’d hardly be described as prolific.

So, with Chelsea still feeling they lack consistency up front, rumour has it they’re on the look out for a striker in the January window.

Scolari missed out on his preferred choice of Robinho in the summer and Luis Fabiano’s £25million price tag could rule him out now that Chelsea are reportedly intent on limiting their spending. So, who else could Chelsea opt for? Well, according to The Sun, it’s Michael Owen.

You see, somehow The Sun seem to be in the know when it comes to Scolari’s budget and they suggest he will be given around £10million to spend in January. Therefore, with Owen apparently valued at somewhere between £3million-£5million, they suggest this means Chelsea are considering a move for the Newcastle striker.

Makes perfect sense doesn’t it? Well, until you consider The Sun’s next part of the plan, which would see Michael Owen taking a cut in his current £108,000 wages to the £60,000 they say Chelsea would be prepared to pay him.

Mind you, they have thrown in a playing bonus to top it up—just to make it sound a bit more credible of course.

But what about the fact that the Newcastle man has been out injured himself for the last few weeks, would his seemingly constant injuries make him a viable option? Well, The Sun assure us Chelsea will be "monitoring" his fitness and form in the next couple of months.

In fact, I think the only part of the story The Sun neglected slightly is the fact that Chelsea already have Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Salomon Kalou, as well as the talented Franco Di Santo to come through, they haven’t really made it clear what the plan would be with once we’d added yet another name to that list.

More importantly, they also failed to take Newcastle’s view into consideration, and unfortunately for The Sun, Joe Kinnear has rubbished the whole idea.

The Newcastle interim boss told Sky Sports News “I have spoken to Michael about it, he’s bewildered himself where this stuff comes from. He just doesn’t know. Of course we want to keep our best players and I have made that known to Michael.”

So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see who they think up next.
