Reggie Bush Miami Dolphins: 5 Reasons Reggie Won't Return to Glory in Miami

Brandon GalvinJun 1, 2018

Miami Dolphins made headlines earlier today when they traded for superstar running back and prima donna Reggie Bush.

Miami was looking to avoid bringing back Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams for another season and landed two quality runners in 2011 second-round draft pick Daniel Thomas and now Bush.

Or is Reggie a quality runner?

Does he have what it takes to return to glory as he heads to South Beach?

Not so much. In fact, Miami has a worse destination for Reggie. Perhaps, instead of rocking the boat, Bush should have embraced New Orleans’ decision to back into the first round for Mark Ingram so he could stay with the Saints.

Bush is as weak-minded as he is a weak runner. How many people outside of Miami expect him to make a difference? Bush may be back in the headlines with this trade, but it’s going to be short lived as he continues to disappoint in his career.

Here’s five reasons Reggie won’t return to glory in Miami.

But don't worry Reggie, I'll still wear my New Orleans Saints jersey as a throwback to your good ol' days!

5. Still Injury-Prone

1 of 5

Reggie Bush is still one of the more injured runners in the league. He simply cannot stay healthy to save his life and is now headed to the hard-hitting AFC.

Miami has a history of injury-prone runners with Ronnie Brown being the most recent. Will the injury bug continue to plague high-profile runners in Miami?

In a conference with the Jets, Ravens, Steelers and Patriots, Reggie may not be able to last more than half the season.

He is going to get pummeled, and it remains to be seen if he added strength in the offseason.

4. Absence of Sean Payton

When healthy, Reggie Bush is a threat, and Sean Payton made sure of that.

Payton is one of the elite offensive football minds in the NFL today. He was always willing to make sure Reggie got a fair shot at making an impact for the ball club and knew just how to utilize his abilities.

Will Tony Sparano and his coaching staff truly utilize Bush to the best of his abilities or were they merely looking to bring another big name to South Beach?

Does Bush have what it takes to succeed without a man who supported him?

We’ll see how he reacts.

3. Is He Willing To Overcome Recent Adversity?

3 of 5

One would think that few months would humble Reggie Bush after giving back his Heisman trophy and being overtaken on the Saints roster by 2009 Heisman winner Mark Ingram.

He had issues with Twitter and has now hit an all-time low as he was traded to the Dolphins and forced to take a massive pay cut. He has never lived up to his expectations in the NFL due to injury and lack of ability. He has officially hit rock bottom.

Some men would use these recent downfalls as the catalyst for future success. Does anybody think Reggie is in the state of mind and possesses the intestinal fortitude to use it as a catapult to prove everybody wrong?

All signs point to no thus far in his career. He expected life in the NFL to come as easy as it did at USC, and it has been anything but.

Unfortunately for Bush, his Super Bowl ring pales in comparison to his downfall.

2. Can He Run Between Tackles?

4 of 5

Everybody knows Tony Sparano’s game plan. He is an advocate of winning football, also known as tough-nosed defense and smash-mouth power running.

Believe it or not, Reggie actually looked quite decent to begin the season running between the tackles. He ran tougher and stronger than ever, but will that carry over to Miami?

Is he still willing to lower his head or will he continue to dance behind the line of scrimmage and try to turn the corner before he’s ready?

This is going to be a major obstacle for Reggie, because if he fails to run between the tackles and tries to persistently bounce outside, he could be benched quicker than he was traded.

1. Will He Know His Role?

5 of 5

The No. 1 reason Reggie Bush will not return to glory is because of the presence of rookie Daniel Thomas out of Kansas State.

Thomas was my No. 3 overall running back in the 2011 class. I insisted all draft season that Miami do everything in their power to bolster the offensive line and then grab Thomas. They wisely chose Mike Pouncey and then traded up into the second round to land the man that best fits their style of offense.

Thomas is a phenomenal runner with solid speed and great power. He is the definition of the type of power runner Tony Sparano covets. He is going to excel behind this bruising offensive line led by Jake Long and Mike Pouncey. With Thomas impressing and exploding onto the scene as a rookie, he is going to dominate the touches immediately, which will leave Bush riding the pine.

Reggie will be asked to spell Thomas as a spark plug, but that will be the extent of his usage. It’s all about Thomas in South Beach, and he’ll soon be the bigger name.

We should all prepare for another Twitter blast from Reggie as he expresses his displeasure playing second fiddle to a superior runner.
