WEC Results: Mike Brown Defeats Urijah Faber By First Round TKO To Win Title

Josh NasonNov 5, 2008

Mike Brown pulled off a huge upset by defeating Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber via first-round TKO to headline an exciting night of World Extreme Cagefighting from the Hard Rock Seminole Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Brown had Faber in a single leg that the champion escaped from. However, Faber somewhat foolishly bounced off from the cage and attempted a low-percentage back elbow on Brown. As he did, Brown caught him with a short uppercut that dropped the champ. Brown (seen here) then jumped all over Faber, mounting his back and driving him with unanswered punches before the fight was stopped. Just like that, a pale guy with red hair took down the face of the promotion via TKO. Wow. Official finish was 2:37 of the first round and Mike Brown is the new WEC Featherweight Champion.

In other action with analysis delivered by Ropes, Ring and Cage.com:

>Jake Rosholt defeated Nissen Osterneck via TKO (punches) at 3:48 of 2nd round.

First Round: I can't hear Osterneck's name without thinking of J.J. Nissen, a major bread manufacturer here in Maine...I remember Rosholt from an episode of Tapout, a show that is underrated for helping up-and-comers with name recognition His long blond hair is throwing me off though...Osterneck looks great midway through the first round, laying a barrage of punches on Rosholt, who seems a lot more comfortable on the ground...Rosholt lands a knee to the shoulder that comes dangerously close to the head, which would be a point for Osterneck. Frank Mir makes the point he tries to stay away from those because of the possibility of that happening...Rosholt closes out the first round looking strong, grounding and pounding Osterneck who narrowly avoids getting the fight stopped.

Second Round: Osterneck is looking for a submission early, nearly getting Rosholt in a kimura into a triangle choke at one point...this fight is really, really good thus far, something this Las Vegas crowd is missing. I thought they were better educated than this...Osterneck unleashes some heavy shots that look to turn the fight in his favor until he gasses out, slipping after a kick at one point...Rosholt took advantage and unloaded about 50 punches before the fight was stopped. Great opener!

>Leonard Garcia def. Jens Pulver via TKO (punches) at 1:12 of the 1st round.

First Round:
Garcia is coming out to Foreigner's Jukebox Hero which wouldn't seem to be the first choice for a young tattooed Latin fighter. Then again, Pulver is coming out to Wu Tang Clan's Forever....WOW. The two begun trading shots around the four-minute mark and Garcia caught Pulver with a right hook that sent him reeling back to the cage. Garcia connected with more unanswered shots and the fight was stopped. The punch wasn't spectacular, but was enough to daze Pulver for Garcia to capitalize. I guess Foreigner works!

>Aaron Simpson def. David Avellan via KO at 18 seconds of the 1st round.

First Round: This was a fill-in bout on tv after the quick Garcia/Pulver fight and was proof positive that you can't take your eyes off an MMA fight for one second. Less than 20 seconds in, Simpson hits an overhand right that connects right on the button, knocking out Avellan with no doubt. No blood, but deadly...frickin' deadly. We'll see the undefeated Simpson again very soon. This has been an exciting card thus far and one that I would show to a first-timer to get them hooked.

>Chael Sonnen defeated Paulo Fihlo by unanimous decision in the 3rd round.

First Round: I still don't understand how a champion doesn't make weight, especially in a rematch situation. C'mon Paulo, you got to be better than that. I feel bad for Sonnen as the belt is going to be eliminated after tonight and this was to be his final shot at it...As Fihlo awaits Sonnen to go down to the ground, Mir is making a great point that Sonnen is stronger on his feet and should let him up. As the black belt in BJJ almost catches Sonnen in an armbar, Mir is nearly proven right....the fans are booing as Sonnen is up top and Fihlo is just waiting it out on the ground. Why Sonnen is not backing off is beyond me...first round mercifully comes to an end. It's hard to score as Fihlo was defending, but Sonnen wasn't really getting anything through.

Second Round: Sonnen finally learns his lesson, telling Filho to get back up as Fihlo keeps trying to go to the ground. The crowd approves...Sonnen drops Filho on his back and then, tells him to get back up. Great theatre at the 2:00 mark...Filho looks gassed, but you get the feeling he's going to catch Sonnen in a bad spot and submit him due to a mental mistake. I'll give that round to Sonnen and have him up 2-0 going into the final five minutes.

Third Round: Sonnen is simply shadowboxing, but not landing anything as Filho wants nothing to do with it. He dropped on the ground in a final attempt to go all BJJ on Sonnen, but no dice...as we cross the 2:00 mark, this fight is all shadowboxing and is quite boring. The crowd is chanting 'Bullshit'. Promoters LOVE that...Mir is asking what Filho keeps staring at off to the side and the comment is made by the play-by-play guy that he has no idea what's going on...fight finally ends with Sonnen landing a couple glancing blows on Filho, who barely threw more than 10 punches that entire round. There is no post-fight interview with either guy, which is telling. You get the feeling Filho will have a lot to explain tomorrow, while Sonnen gets no real rub off the win.
