Who Is Galloping Closer to the Heisman?
The season is not quite at an end, but let’s see who the Heisman front-runners are to this point. With the brilliant play in the Big 12 this year, most of the leading horses should emerge from that conference. We are almost to the final lap, so cross your fingers.
Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
With an offense that has more rhythm than Michael Jackson on the concert stage, quarterback Graham Harrell has become the core of Texas Tech’s success. Harrell is leading the nation in passing with 3,621 yards, while also having his Red Raiders in position to possibly make a charge at the BCS National Title.
At this point, Graham is certainly a front-runner. The next two games with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma could help make or break his case for the illustrious prize.
Tim Tebow, Florida
The intangibles do matter. He is master and commander for the Gators on the field. Tebow, being last season's Heisman winner, also has his squad running on all cylinders. If the red-hot Gators are able to capture a second national title for Coach Urban Meyer, it is possible that superman Tim Tebow could potentially earn his second Heisman.
Colt McCoy, Texas
The numbers don’t lie for the Longhorn stud. Colt has a ridiculous completion rate of 79 percent, combined with 30 touchdowns and 2,579 yards passing. McCoy at least deserves recognition for having a name that fits the bill. Colt McCoy, quarterback for Texas! Heck, that sounds just as good as...John Wayne, now starring in The Cowboys. Must be a winning formula.
Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech
Trophy or no trophy, this stud is wowing everyone in college football and will do the same in the NFL. Even with 15 touchdowns and 921 yards receiving, it is more than the numbers—it is all the intangibles he possesses.
Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
The numbers and efficiency are overwhelming for the Sooner. Thirty-four touchdowns with 3,086 yards passing have Big-Game Bob Stoops managing one well-oiled machine on offense. Bradford will be in the Heisman race regardless of what happens.
Javon Ringer, Michigan State
This guy is certainly a ringer. The Michigan State tailback is a key force in the Spartans' 8-2 start in 2008. Ringer is leading the NCAA in both rushing with 1,427 yards and scoring with 108 points.
