Start of the Week

Fantasy Football's Week 10 is coming. Sean has other obligations this week and asked that I fill in for him.

This week we are going to highlight as our start of the week a defensive end from an unusual place. The Arizona Cardinals.

One thing Ken Whisenhunt brought with him and the defense that was installed is one that is hard-hitting. When defenses hit hard good things happen. Arizona still gets burned from time to time, but getting burned on the field does not translate into a loss of fantasy points.

This week, that defense faces San Francisco in the desert. Defensively speaking, the 49ers are giving up three sacks a game, have lallowed 10 forced fumbles, and lost five to defensive lineman. Some of that will drop with Shaun Hill at the quarterback position but I still like Arizona’s defensive line to have a good day.

Of the front four if your league requires a defensive tackle honorable mention Darnell Dockett is the play maker you wish to start but more realistically you need to play a defensive end. The man you want is Travis Laboy. He may or may not be on waivers depending how many DL you need to start in your league or how active your league is. If you have him get him in your lineup.

Start DL

One name you know that is in most of the time for your DL lineup would be Robert Mathis. Ben Roethlisberger has been a tackling dummy this season. With Dwight Freeney and Mathis, this trend should continue. I expect Freeney to be double- teamed allowing Mathis a better opportunity to make plays. Keep Mathis in your lineup this week.

Chris Long has lived up to his billing as the top defensive line rookie. Look for him to have a solid scoring week when the Rams play the New York Jets. Look for him to be a solid DL1 this week. Unless you invested in a Mario Williams-caliber DL, start Long.

Tennessee visits Chicago this week. Through seven games, the Bears have given up over 100 tackles, 12 sacks, and four turnovers to the defensive lines they play. With Kyle Orton out for at least a month, and the undefeated Titans coming to town, this is a matchup that screams start me. The biggest beneficiary is Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Vanden Bosch has been banged up but should play this week. He also is in line to put up good numbers for fantasy points. There is a secondary beneficiary as well. Those of you who have leagues that require you to start a DT as well Tony Brown looks to benefit. If you are able to slide him into your DT spot, I would do so.

Start LB

Jacksonville gives us two start matchups this week at LB. Over the last three weeks the Jaguars have given up an average of 18 tackles per week. They have also given up one sack, one pass defended, and a turnover and a half a game to linebackers. Jacksonville is facing the sorry Lions who will help the Jags offense earn first downs and allow more plays to be made.

Ernie Sims is the main play maker for the Lions and should continue that trend. Start him this week. The second player to benefit is Detroit’s middle linebacker Paris Lenon. The good news is only 4 percent of people in ESPN leagues own him, so he should be available in your league and would make a good LB2 or LB3 start. Look to add him if you are thin at LB this week.

DeMeco Ryans should be starting for you weekly because you drafted him as one of the top LBs in the league. Still, he has played a little sporadically this year. I want to assure you Ryans will play well this week as Houston plays Baltimore. QB Sage Rosenfels is good enough to keep Houston’s defense rested.

Finally, I admit I am a little biased
I am a Penn State fan. The good news for fantasy owners is that very few Nittany Lions play well in the NFL Unless they are a linebacker.

Writing IDPs allows me to jock Paul Posluszny. This guy is the real deal though injuries have held him back a little. This week's opponent, New England,  has given up seventeen sacks, just over one and a half per game to linebackers. This bodes well for the Puz to make many plays in the middle. Start him.

Start DB

First, let us have a moment of silence for Brett Favre who is the first QB ever to throw 300 interceptions. This stat actually has importance because the Rams play the Jets this week and two of the hardest names to spell Oshiomogho Atogwe is good at picking off passes. He is in a good position to put up a very good game.
