Cowboys First Half Cause For Concern?

Steven BencivengaNov 3, 2008

So I, like many, believed before the season started that this was going to be the Cowboys year. After the first few games they looked dominant. The weapons that they have on offense would be too much for any team to contain. Then things started going wrong against Washington.

For some reason they just never looked right in the game. While only losing by 2 it took a late comeback to get that close. Clinton Portis completely exposed their weak run defense and the offense failed to utilize all their weapons including sensational rookie Felix Jones. After that game I gave the Cowboys a mulligan. While they were in Dallas, division games in the NFC East are always tough.

The following week the team struggled to put away a winless Bengals team. Then the week after the really bad news came. Not only did they Cowboys lose another game which they were badly outplayed but they continued to be ravaged by injuries. This was the game they lost two big play makers in Felix Jones and Pro Bowl Quarterback Tony Romo.

No team is built to do well when your star quarterback goes down but the very next week to get dismantled by the lowly Rams was a complete shock to myself and many others. Maybe the Cowboys weren't the team we thought they were. Maybe as a fan I got too excited before the season started.

Then they come out the next week and play great defense against a division leader and things look right for the time being. With Romo out they should have been a team playing small ball with suffocating defense. While still skeptical this game gave me a little hope with the upcoming trip to the division leading Giants.

I attended this game and while I had a blast tailgating with friends the game itself was miserable. Jacobs couldn't be stopped and Brad Johnson was so bad third stringer Brooks Bollinger was a welcome change to start the second half. Of course his first pass resulted in an interception that led to a touchdown two plays later. I also had to deal with many loud drunken giants fans yelling at me all game but I took it in stride.

So where does this leave the Cowboys? At 5-4 They are at the bottom of the division and have a bye week coming up. This bye week is sorely needed. Witten will have a week to rest his broken rib. Newman should also be back to help with the pass defense. Felix Jones should be returning and most importantly Romo will be back.

With all those players returning this team is still far from perfect as we have seen the last few weeks. After the bye the Cowboys face the Skins on the road then come home to face the 49ers and Seahawks. The Cowboys need to come out of the bye and win these games to be considered for the playoffs this year in the tough NFC East.

So the question is can the Cowboys recover from these injuries or is the team just not very good to begin with. I am a believer of the first one. This team is just too deep on offense to be put down. The pickup of Roy Williams will work out tremendously when they have someone that can actually throw the ball down field. Teams will no longer be able to double TO and Witten, if they do Williams will be getting a lot of long TD's.

So maybe I am a little biased being a big Cowboys fan but I can still see this team making a great playoff run. Only thing that might stop them is they might have dug themselves into too deep of a hole in the NFC East. Only time will tell.
