Fantasy Football: Top 10 Draft Pick Grades...Whom Do You Regret Picking?

Brandon EricksonNov 3, 2008

We can clearly see that the top-10 players in this year's fantasy-football draft produced some of the biggest flops we could have never conceived. When drafting, there is sense of competition, cockiness, anticipation...and did I mention cockiness?

Well, 10 weeks into the season, who's laughing now? (Well, if you picked up a QB that plays in Foxboro, you're probably kicking yourself right now, if you got his No. 1 receiver, you're probably doing the same.)

I'm in a fairly tight league with some friends and have found myself flabbergasted at the fact of how many players have underperformed or gotten injured. Here's a look at the average top 10 players picked out of one of the largest fantasy football based sites in Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.

1. LaDainian Tomlinson (HB/SD) Overall Grade: C+

L.T. has been mediocre so far. The Chargers have fallen to a 3-5 record with this past week on bye...yeah...L.T. kept his team in the game. He's averaging 3.9 yards a carry and 68.9 yards a game. On top of that, he's ranked 11th in the NFL in total yards with 551, tied for sixth in the NFL with four rushing touchdowns, and hasn't really developed into the elusive back we've all come to know him as. As a No. 1 pick, this guy may have been a waste. (Average Pick: 1.3)

2. Adrian Peterson (HB/Min) Overall Grade: A (LL DAY)

Adrian has proved that he's still the running threat we remembered him as a rookie in '07. He's second in the NFL in total yards with 823, tied for fourth with six TDs on the ground, and is averaging a respectable 4.7 yards per carry, 102.9 per game.

He's still trying to break the third level of defenses, as most of them are starting to respect his playmaking ability to break one loose at any given time. Expect big things from A.P. the rest of the way, as he fights to claim the rushing title that got away from him last year. (Average Pick: 2.3)

3. Steven Jackson (HB/StL) Overall Grade: C-/D+

I've realized that I can't give Jackson a complete 'D' grade per-say, what with his ability to still somehow manage to scratch a top 15 RB ranking in rushing yards with 525, but I seriously don't like this guy. His only game worth mentioning was his Week Seven rout against the falling Dallas Cowboys, with three touchdowns and 160 yards rushing.

Beyond that though, Jackson has only scored one other rushing touchdown this season (total of four, tied for sixth in the NFL). It's quite obvious that his holdout affected his performance, opening the season. Team chemistry could also be in question, as Jackson sold out his teammates for a higher paycheck.

The fact is, if it was the end of the season and he made the announcement of his hold out, his teammates probably might not have as much against him, what with the advance notice of his wishes to extend his contract. But he chose to be a distraction in camp and not show up.

Jackson also doesn't have Orlando Pace blocking for him for the rest of the season. All this taken aside, Jackson is a great running back, but I just don't see much value in him this year with a 2-4 Rams team that does as its "star" running back performs.

He's averaging 4.1 yards a carry, 75 a game. And yeah...I picked this guy...and benched him after two weeks of watching blanks...(I also benched him in Week Seven...Oh my God...) (Average Pick: 4.2)

4. Brian Westbrook (HB/Phi) Overall Grade: B-/C+

I love Westbrook and his ability to run the ball. With that said, if he's healthy and doesn't break any more ribs, expect him to be a late-season threat. His only numbers that look saggy is that he's ranked 22nd in total rushing with 422 rushing yards.

Otherwise, he's tied for fourth in the league with four rushing touchdowns (also has two receiving touchdowns) and averaging 4.4 a carry, 70.3 a game. Say what you want, this guy can find the end zone, and barring any injuries, he should be a force down the stretch. Especially if Philly keeps winning. (Average Pick: 4.7)

5. Joseph Addai (HB/Ind) Overall Grade: D (isapointing)

Addai has been plagued with injuries and is trailing the second-string running back Dominic Rhodes by 14 rushing yards. With 248 yards rushing (49th in the NFL), four touchdowns (tied for sixth), and is averaging a deflated 3.1 yards per carry, 41.3 a game.

With Indy performing under the norm, Manning underperforming, and Rhodes taking a good chunk of the carries...I would have bailed out on Addai four weeks ago...Don't expect much from him. (Average Pick: 6.2)

6. Tom Brady (QB/NE) Overall Grade: Absent / F

Can't say too much here. Unless you've been living under a rock the past few months, you know that Brady's been out since Week One, placing the QB who had the greatest season in history on IR after one week into the '08 season. Can't really grade a guy who hasn't and can't play. I feel so bad for anyone that picked this guy early...Especially with other options that were available. (Average Pick: 7.0)

7. Randy Moss (WR/NE) Overall Grade: C-/D+

Well...When you come off a record-breaking season, and your star QB goes down and you have Matt Cassel chucking footballs to you, I wouldn't be surprised with Moss' mind thinking, "I wish 2008 would just end!" That or trade, but I don't think he'd want to stop working with Brady.

He's ranked 17th in the league with 536 receiving yards (thus the C- part of the grade) and tied for fourth in the league with four receiving TDs amongst wideouts. Moss is a solid WR3 and an average WR2 at best. Expect him to be fighting to be a top-15 WR this season...But with Cassel throwing the ball, don't expect miracles like in '07. (Average Pick: 7.2)

8. Marion Barber (RB/Dal) Overall Grade: B+

Barber has been a silent producer this year, what with 665 total rushing yards (sixth in the NFL), five rushing touchdowns (fifth), along with two receiving touchdowns, averaging 3.9 yards a carry, 73.9 a game.

Even though with Romo out, Barber has kept the offense scoring and kept them in the games they've needed. With Romo still out and even when he comes back, expect them to put the ball in Barber's hands. With Johnson passing and throwing interceptions every other throw, they'd be a fool to not give Barber the rock. With Barber, your team should be playoff worthy, even though Dallas might not be. (Average Pick: 8.3)

9. Frank Gore (RB/SF) Overall Grade: B+

Like Barber, Gore has been the workhorse for a team soul-searching for wins. Gore has rushed for 629 yards (eighth), four rushing TDs (t-sixth), along with two receiving TDs, averaging a respectable 4.6 a carry, 78.6 a game.

With a coach hungry to help this team win at any cost, expect Martz to give the ball to Gore a bit more. When you need wins, you gotta put the ball in the hands of your playmaker, and Gore is exactly that. (Average Pick: 10.3)

10. Clinton Portis (RB/Was) Overall Grade: A+ (wesome)

Portis is the running back to look out for this year (as any year), but at no other time has he been more productive at this point in the season. Portis leads the NFL with 944 rushing yards, seven rushing TDs (t-third), and with a rolling 5.0 yards a carry, 118.0 a game!

Portis has been clearly underestimated in comparison to his running back peers this year, and with an NFC East that is only has the NY Giants as the only threat, expect Portis to keepin' on rolling. (Average Pick: 11.9)

Surprises of the Season

RB/Atl Michael Turner - 794 rushing yards (3rd), 6 rushing TDs (t-4th), 4.5/carry, 99.3/game

RB/Chi - Rookie Matt Forte - 641 rushing yards (7th), 4 rushing TDs (t-6th), 3.8/carry, 78.6/game

RB/Hou - Rookie Steve Slaton - 538 rushing yards (13th), 5 rushing TDs (t-5th), 4.5/carry, 67.3/game

WR/Min Bernard Berrian - 621 receiving yards (9th), 4 receiving TDs (t-4th), 5.9/catch, 77.6/game

QB/Ari Kurt Warner - 104.2 QB Rating, 202/296 completions, 2431 passing yards (2nd), 16 TDs (2nd), 6 Int, 303.9/game
