Some Cornhusker blame to go around for the carnage in Norman…
HG is backtracking a little on our original post saying: let’s not blame anyone, let’s just chalk it up to a loss.
That would be fine if we lost by 14, but we weren’t even in that game. Not even close.
And we know enough about the Huskers that they are better than going down 28-0 in the first 7 minutes of play.
Replaying the game, the Cornhuskers were ill-prepared and stunned from the opening. They didn’t know what hit him. You could see it in the body language and the demeanor. on the players and the coaches.
For that, you have to wonder what the mental preparedness of the players. Did Pelini and staff warn the players not to get discouraged if they go down early? Was the game plan to go up 7-0 and sit on the ball? Or, was is game just a serious of unfortunate events that no team can recover from…
Did the Cornhuskers come in thinking that they could match up with the Sooners man-for-man, only to figuure out shortly before the game that they weren’t even on the same level?
Part of me thinks it’s an old-fashion ass-kicking. HG refrains from pointing to individual players, but you have to question the gameplan regarding Joe Ganz. The Oklahoma coaching staff must of saw him tipping his plays in the tapes.
Ouch. I think Bo will accept and deserve blame.
We love Bo, but this one is on the coaching staff, and they know it:
- They didn’t allow the players to speak to the media after last weeks game, which we can infer that the coaching staff apologized to the players for the poor game plan.
- That putting players in the wrong place and the lack of execution were equally to blame.
- That the Huskers were ill-prepared to deal with the OU crowd.
- That the Huskers were blindsided and stunned from the get-go.
- That the strategy to be aggressive on offense was a huge mistake.
The overriding and unspoken fear is that this version of the 2008 Huskers will lose complete confidence in themselves because of this ass-whopping and collapse to 0-3 in the final 3 games. That would negate a lot of the good progress this team has already made.
This is the premier challenge for the ‘08 Huskers: Can they bounce back?
The good news: ESPN is still projecting Nebraska to play in the Insight.com Bowl against Big Ten mediocrity.
Interesting note: the last two Insight.com Bowl winners were Oklahoma State (8) and Texas Tech (2).
