Robinho Interview: The Brazilian Walks the Walk, but also Talks the Talk

Brazilian Football by SBNov 1, 2008

In an interview with Brazilian magazine Placar, Manchester City's new star Robinho spoke about his experiences since making the move from Spain to Eastlands. S B brings the translation...

How was your break up with Wagner Ribeiro [Robinho's former agent], who's been with you since Santos?

There was no fight or anything dude, it's just that my dad is my businessman now and Wagner my friend. The press has said things about him but not me. There was no fight. I thank him for all he's done.

What can you say about your first weeks in England?

Pure show! In my first four matches, two goals. Not bad for someone who isn't No. 9. I want to score more goals but if my teammates are better positioned I'll settle for an assist which is also important.

You own the team right now. Were you prepared for this?

No, no I own nothing (laughs). But I know my teammates trust in me, I like this, this feeling before games. The owner is the Sheik (laughs).

And your English? How's that coming along?

Ah, I'm still weak, but I aim to be fluent in six months, you'll see. I think speaking English is beautiful. I am studying together with my wife.

Last year you said you wanted to be the world's number one. Can you achieve this playing for Manchester City?

Yes it can be done. And it will be done. You can be sure. Many people think it's difficult because of the team, but I think it's even easier, because here I will always start. At Madrid I was only used for important matches.

You sometimes went unnoticed in some matches and then took control in others. How can you explain this irregularity at Madrid?

The fact that I didn't always start. I like playing regularly. At Madrid this did not happen due to the large group.

And what's it like being Jo's partner?

Jo is playing very well. If he keeps this up he'll be a sure pick for 2010.

And yourself and Elano together again?

I'm going to give him another title. Just like at Santos (laughs). But seriously, playing with him is easy because I know him.

Leaving Real was with some strife, just like Santos. Why do you think this happens?

At Santos I think maybe I was to blame. I thought it was time to go to Europe. I don't regret any of my decisions.

You voluntarily left Real which is one of the best clubs in the world?

In terms of marketing it may be the best. But for me the best team is one where you get to play. It's no good if you are at a so called best team but you sit on a bench.

And how were you received in England?

It was great. They treat me like Maradona over here. I feel a little embarrassed at times. I hope I can repay all this love on the field. Funny, a black Maradona (laughs). I just can't score any goals by hand (laughs).

What`s missing for Robinho now? Your little girl is on the way, you're wealthy, learning English...

(Laughs) We, players, can never stop dreaming. I want to win the World Cup. I want to be the world's number one. In my personal life I want another kid—Robinha. I even have a name picked out: Giulia. When I'm 29 or 30 I want to go back to Santos and win the Libertadores.
