Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger's Latest Comments Doom Arsenal to Failure Again
With this summer being such a tumultuous one for Arsenal supporters, many fans were in dire need of reassuring words from the manager. With rumors flying around all over the place, if Wenger had come out and said that Arsenal are working to address all of their needs, move the deadwood and reinvigorate the squad, fans would be calm among the general madness.
However, not only did Arsene Wenger not say these things in the comments he made to Arsenal.com, he was about the least bit reassuring and as vague as he possibly could have been.
In short, at a time when Arsenal supporters most needed calming words from the experienced Boss, they only got more reason to bite their fingernails. And why are supporters nervously doing this?
Because there is an increasing feeling that, in the most crucial of summers, absolutely nothing is being done to shore up the team.
Letโs pick apart Wengerโs comments to show each way in which they fall woefully short of placating the fans and, more importantly, showing that the squad will actually be improved for next season.
First, Wenger claimed that Arsenal are โworking long nightsโ to achieve their goals. Sounds nice, but when you consider theย report in The Sun that show Wenger on a nice holiday in the Mediterranean, that point seems to go to shambles. If the club is really working through long, tedious nights to achieve their goals, how can one explain the eternity it has taken for the Gervinho transfer to get done, considering it is the most straightforward deal you can have.
Next, Wenger attempts to fool the fans by claiming that "if there was an obvious choice, people would already have made their decisions." I guess the boss has not been paying much attention to Manchester United, who got their three big transfer signingsโAshley Young, Phil Jones and David de Geaโcompleted before July 1.
And Wenger further tries to justify this by claiming that we canโt just โgo out and buyโ because โwe want to find the quality we need.โ Arsenal plays in the Premier League, and I am sure that it cannot be that much of a struggle to check out Christopher Samba, who actually regards the red and white as a privilege, not a stepping stone. Ah, but this is Arsenal, and we must spend valuable time plumbing the depths of Ligue 2 for defensive reinforcements.
Here we come to the three main problems with Wengerโs frightening comments. One can only hope that he is bluffing and that he actually has some common sense.
The extremely strong hint that Kieran Gibbs will be our starting left back next year is truly incredible. The boy cannot stay fit for a whole game, and a club with more injuries per season than hairs on Wengerโs head simply cannot afford to gamble on Gibbsโs fitness.
Furthermore, Gibbs does not know how to defend, and even though Arsene is right that he is at an age where he must play, loaning him out to get some experience in that aspect of the game would benefit him greatly. This smacks of the failed gamble in the January transfer window that left us with only Koscielny and Squillaci when Djourou got hurt. Awful.
The last two, and arguably the most important, of Wenger's unfortunate comments relate to one another. Le Boss says that we only need to buy one or two players, while keeping all of the ones that we have. I try to be a reasoned journalist, and those who have red my few pieces know that I am usually measured. However, this is nothing short of outrageous.
Our best player, Cesc Fabregas, is very probably moving to Barcelona. Samir Nasri looks even more likely to leave, despite Wengerโs resolve to keep them (which, I must admit, is welcomed, if true), and we have countless subpar players who cannot do the job that a club like Arsenal requires. If Gervinho is one signing, who is the other one?
Letโs just make an assumption that Fabregas and Nasri go, and we only buy Gervinho and Christopher Samba (which probably will not happen because he makes too much sense for Wenger to sign him). Who plugs out gaping hole in midfield? Will it be deadwood like Tomas Rosicky or the unsellable Denilson? No, incredibly, it will probably be players who are not yet ready for that role, such as Aaron Ramsey, Henri Lansbury and Jack Wilshere.
Right now, what Arsenal supporters need most is assurance that the squad is moving in the right direction. Not only are we not getting it, but there are actually signs that the eternally stubborn boss is set to doom the Gunners to an astounding seven trophyless seasons. By not righting the many wrongs of the squad by spending the considerable transfer fund available to him, Wenger is doing his best to push the club backward.
I know that I will get an avalanche of backlash from Wenger supporters, but if any other man was managing the club, the leash would not be so long. By showing his trademark stubbornness once again and not showing any visible signs of seeing the deficiencies of his team, I really do fear for Arsenal, and I can only hope that Wengerโs latest comments do not come to pass.
