CFB: Why Russell Wilson's transfer to the Wisconsin Badgers puts them at the Top

Josh RosenblatJun 27, 2011

The football program dubbed as “O-line U,” just grabbed itself a quarterback in the former NC State Wolfpack, Russell Wilson.

Wilson left NC State after he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies and played in their farm system this spring, but after a spring playing hardball, Wilson has decided that he belongs on the gridiron rather than on the ball field.

After visiting schools such as Auburn, Wilson chose to move to Madison and suit up for Bret Bielema’s Badgers.

For Wilson, this move may not seem like a good one on the surface. To put it plainly, Wisconsin has never been known for its quarterbacks.

But, after a winning the Big Ten a season ago with the unheralded Scott Tolzien under center, and one of the top rushing attacks in the nation, the Badgers improved immensely with the addition of Wilson.

As the Wolfpack quarterback, Wilson passed for 28 touchdowns and also ran for nine in 2010 as he led NC State to a 23-7 dismantling of West Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Wilson is a shade under six feet tall but is solidly built at over 200 pounds.

He is a tremendous athlete that should allow the Badgers to use a dimension that their Big Ten rivals rarely see for a team that is notorious for a conservative approach on the offensive side of the football.

Along with continuous efforts to wear down the opposing defense by using the running game, Wisconsin should also be able to utilize Wilson’s arm strength, adding another dimension to an already efficient offense.

Because of this major addition, Wilson should be able to step in with the Badgers seamlessly and put them over that top as the clear-cut favorites to win the revamped 2011 Big Ten football championship.
