2011 NBA Draft Results: How Each Pick Affects the Team's Odds of Winning a Title
The 2011 NBA Draft is over. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kyrie Irving, The Minnesota Timberwolves took Derrick Williams, and 58 other players with high expectations were chosen. Each pick changed the odds of their team's chances of winning a title this season, and this slideshow gives those odds.
Every team had areas that they needed to address. Some addressed them well, while others swept them under the rug.
The teams that addressed their needs have a much better chances of winning a title this season, but what are their odds now?
REMEMBER: This List Will Be Updated After Every Pick
1 of 31This slideshow will be updated after every pick in the draft, so keep coming back after each selection is made!
Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for all things related to the NBA Draft, from Live Results to Grades and Trade Rumors.
Cleveland Cavaliers: Kyrie Irving
2 of 31The Cleveland Cavaliers were the second-worst team in the NBA last season, going 19-63. The Cavaliers have a lot of needs, but they also had two of the first four picks in the NBA Draft.
The Cavaliers decided to take Kyrie Irving with the first-overall pick, and that tells us that they have complete faith in him. They already have Baron Davis, so they really didn't need a point guard.
Because the Cavaliers won't sit Irving behind Davis, so the Cavaliers have two options now. They have the option to play both Davis and Irving as a solid backcourt, or they can trade Davis to address their other needs.
The choice to take Irving is definitely a positive for the Cavaliers, the question is, how much so? The Cavaliers have a lot of flexibility now, and they have taken the first step to trying to get back to the playoffs.
The Cavaliers have definitely just made themselves better than a team or two—or will have after they figure out what to do with their team.
Minnesota Timberwolves: Derrick Williams
3 of 31The Minnesota Timberwolves were the worst team in the NBA last season, going 17-65. Minnesota has a few needs that they need to address, and just one first-round pick to do it.
The Timberwolves have taken Derrick Williams with the second pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. The Timberwolves really needed a great forward like Williams.
Williams can play either small or power forward. With a 6'9” body, Williams can play inside. Williams also has the shot to make NBA threes, and the athleticism to drive through the lane like a small forward.
Williams is NBA-ready, and he will become an All-Star down the road.
The Timberwolves were incredibly bad last season, and while Williams helps them, they are a long way away from the playoffs, let alone a championship.
Utah Jazz: Enes Kanter
4 of 31The Utah Jazz went 39-43 last season, and they were three spots away from the playoffs. The Jazz took Enes Kanter with the third overall pick.
This pick does not address their need for a guard, but they have solidified their frontcourt, making them a good team.
The Jazz had another lottery pick left, so they knew that they could use that to address their need for a guard.
This was a great pick for the Jazz, and it helps them get closer to the playoffs, although they are not quite there yet.
Cleveland Cavaliers: Tristan Thompson
5 of 31The Cleveland Cavaliers have made their second pick of the draft, and they have selected Tristan Thompson.
The Cavaliers needed any type of talent, and they think they have found some in Thompson.
The Cavaliers are not close to becoming a playoff team, as they still have a few years to go. Thompson is a great player in the paint, but he is terrible outside of it.
Thompson can help the Cavaliers, but he was not the best player for the team to take.
The Cavs have a chance to make the playoffs two or three years down the road, but they are not even close to winning it all.
Toronto Raptors: Jonas Valanciunas
6 of 31The Toronto Raptors went 22-60 last season, and they have a lot of needs to address. The Raptors took Jonas Valanciunas with the fifth-overall pick,
Valanciunas is only 19 years old, and he is a good athlete. Valanciunas will help solidify the shaky frontcourt of the Raptors.
Valanciunas may not be able to come to the NBA next season, but the Raptors won't mind, seeing as they are not even close to reaching the playoffs.
Valanciunas is definitely going to help Toronto, but they are still five or six years from the playoffs.
Washington Wizards: Jan Vesely
7 of 31The Washington Wizards went 3-38 on the road, and 23-59 overall last season, and they needed talent at any position except for point guard.
The Wizards took Jan Vesely out of the Czech Republic with the sixth pick in the draft.
Vesely can score both in transition and in a half-court set. He is actually very athletic for his 6'11” frame, and he will work well with John Wall and the Wizards.
The Wizards are getting closer to the playoffs, and being a young team, they have a lot of time to get better. The Wizards are three or four years from the playoffs, and at least eight years from a championship.
Charlotte Bobcats: Bismack Biyombo
8 of 31The Charlotte Bobcats went 34-48 last season, and were just outside of the playoffs. The Bobcats took Bismack Biyombo with the seventh overall pick.
The Kings had a lot of options after their trade with the Charlotte Bobcats for the pick, but they went with the big man, Biyombo.
Biyombo is not the best scorer, but he is going to be able to do whatever the Bobcats ask of him, whether it's defensively or scoring on offensive rebounds.
Out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Biyombo has a lot of potential, and the Bobcats are looking forward to seeing him play again.
The team is not ready to compete for a championship, and they seem to be trying to rebuild, so they won't be for quite sometime, perhaps a decade?
Detroit Pistons: Brandon Knight
9 of 31Knight is a great guard who has a good shot and can drive through the lane. Knight plays great perimeter defense, and he can shut down other guards.
Knight is a good passer, and he is expected to be a point guard in the NBA.
The Pistons made a good pick, with “Rip” Hamilton's future being unknown, and they are lucky that Knight fell this far.
The Pistons are getting better, and they have the potential to make it to the playoffs over the next couples of seasons. The Pistons could be championship-ready in as little as four years.
Charlotte Bobcats- Kemba Walker
10 of 31The Charlotte Bobcats went 34-48 last season, missing the playoffs. The Bobcats have been mediocre for a while now, but they hope that Kemba Walker can turn them around.
Walker is an unbelievable player. He is one of the best transition players in the draft. He players excellent perimeter defense. He has a great shot. He never gives up. He can score in bunches.
Walker has the potential to become a superstar, despite being undersized.
Walker will be a point guard for the Bobcats. The team needed a good guard, and it will be interesting to see how Michael Jordan works with Walker.
The Bobcats have a lot of potential now, and they could be playoff-ready.
Sacramento Kings- Jimmer Fredette
11 of 31The Sacramento Kings went 24-58, and they weren't even close to the playoffs. The Milwaukee Bucks took Jimmer Fredette with the 10th overall pick for the Kings.
Jimmer is a great player. He is a good passer, but he is not a true point guard yet. He has a great shot, and he is very athletic.
Fredette could either become an All-Star or a bust like J.J. Redick was. It seems as though everyone loves Jimmer, but it will be interesting to see if he can take his game to the next level.
The Kings have a good offense for Jimmer, but he will need to learn how to defend. The Kings were not even close to the playoffs last season, and they won't be for a long time.
I don't think that Jimmer will help the Kings that much, and because of that, they won't make it to the playoffs for about four to seven years.
Golden State Warriors- Klay Thompson
12 of 31The Golden State Warriors went 36-46 last season, and they need a lot of help. The Warriors selected Klay Thompson from Washington State. Thompson was the first guard taken who we think will become a true shooting guard.
Thompson is a great offensive threat. He is an amazing scorer, with a great shot and an even better drive. He is also a good passer, and his teammates love him.
Thompson has shown us that he is actually a very good defender too, which helped him jump up draft boards.
With so many good guards, the Warriors could trade one of their guards to get some more young talent.
Thompson will fit in with the Warriors nicely, and the team will definitely be better. The Warriors will be two or three years from the playoffs now, and they could win a championship in as little as four if they do everything right (such as signing a good player in free agency).
Utah Jazz- Alec Burks
13 of 31The Utah Jazz came back onto the clock with the 12th overall pick. The Jazz started with Enes Kanter, and then took Alec Burks from Colorado. Burks is a great shooting guard, but the Warriors thought of him as slightly lesser than Klay Thompson.
Burks is a great scorer, and he rebounds well. Burks is a good passer, but he is more of a scorer. Burks does not have his shot down just yet, but he can fix that. Burks is an excellent driver, and he could be the best in the draft.
Burks has always been underrated, but he should get some recognition now.
The Jazz have now addressed their need for a guard with the departure of Deron Williams, and they are a solid team now.
The Jazz are ready to make it into the playoffs as a seventh or eighth seed. The Jazz are getting a lot better, and they could become one of the top teams in the league in a few years.
Phoenix Suns- Markieff Morris
14 of 31The Phoenix Suns went 40-42 last season, just missing the playoffs. The Suns have taken Markieff Morris with the 13th overall pick.
Markieff is considered the lesser of the two twins, but he was taken before his brother Marcus. Markieff is the better rebounder/shot-blocker, while Marcus is the better scorer.
Markieff is a good fit for the Suns, so it is not that surprising that they took him over Marcus. The Suns are looking to contend right away, and they could be on the brink of doing so with Markieff.
My prediction for the Suns is that they will make the playoffs in the next two seasons, and they will go for a championship in five.
Houston Rockets- Marcus Morris
15 of 31The Houston Rockets went 43-39 last season, and were ninth in the West. The Rockets decided to take Marcus Morris right after his brother Markieff went to Phoenix.
Marcus is the better scorer of the two twins, and he is really going to help the Rockets score inside.
The Rockets need a big man who can score like Marcus, and he can use his good feet and nice jump shot to do so.
Marcus Morris may not be the best power forward because of his size, but the Rockets are lucky to get him.
I see the Rockets making the playoffs next season, and trying to win a championship over the next five.
Indiana Pacers- Kawhi Leonard
16 of 31The Indiana Pacers went 37-45 last season, and made the playoffs because of a weak Eastern Conference. The Pacers took Kawhi Leonard from San Diego State. Leonard was projected to be an early-lottery pick, but he fell to 15th overall.
Leonard is a big guy with great strength. Leonard can guard inside or on the perimeter, and he is a great rebounder. Leonard is one of the players who could become a bust, but the Pacers couldn't pass him up.
Leonard could become a great player during his career, and he can really help out the Pacers, who need an athletic forward like him
The Pacers will probably miss the playoffs next season, but will be close. I see the Pacers trying to win a championship in six years.
Phiadelphia 76ers- Nikola Vucevic
17 of 31The Phiadelphia 76ers went 41-41 last season, and were the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. The Sixers took forward/center Nikola Vucevic.
The Sixers could have taken either a guard or a big man, but they decided on 7'0” Vucevic. The Sixers won't trade Andre Iguodala now, and they should have a good team. Vucevic will help the Sixers down-low, and they need a big man who can score like Vucevic.
Vucevic may be big, but he has a good shot along with his excellent basketball body.
The Sixers will return to the playoffs, but they will stay at a poor seed for a few years, and won't be in the hunt for a title for several seasons.
New York Knicks- Iman Shumpert
18 of 31The New York Knicks went 42-40 last season, and were a good team. The Knicks selected Iman Shumpert with the 17th overall pick in the draft.
Shumpert was not expected to go this high, but the point guard is a good player.
The Knicks need defense badly, and Shumpert gives them that. Shumpert is the best perimeter defender available, and he is going to solidify the Knicks.
The Knicks are a good team, and they will be one of the top four seeds in the playoffs next season. The Knicks are going to try to compete for a championship this season, but I don't see them winning one for a few years.
Washington Wizards- Chris Singleton
19 of 31Singleton is an amazing defender who can guard inside or out. Singleton is learning how to rebound better, and he can also score. Singleton can do every well, but he is known for his defense.
Singleton helped fuel Florida State's improbable NCAA tournament run in 2011. He can lead a team, and he should develop nicely.
The Wizards need a defender and Chris Singleton will give them that. With Wall, Vesely and Singleton, the Wizards are a good young team.
When they have time to develop, the Wizards will become a good team, and they should make the playoffs in the next three years, and become a great team in the next five to seven.
Milwaukee Bucks- Tobias Harris
20 of 31The Charlotte Bobcats made the pick for the Milwaukee Bucks, who went 35-47 last season.
The Bucks are getting the rights to Tobias Harris from a trade, and they need a good player like him.
Harris is a smart player, and he can do whatever is necessary for the Bucks. Harris has a lot of potential, and the Bucks should look good compared the rest of the weak East.
The Bucks should be ready to make it to the playoffs in two years, but they won't compete for a title for six or seven.
Minnesota Timberwolves- Donatas Motiejunas
21 of 31The Minnesota Timberwolves took Donatas Motiejunas with the 20th overall pick. The Timberwolves already took Derrick Williams, so they now have a lot of good forwards, so they might trade Motiejunas. Motiejunas is yet another international player, coming from Lithuania.
Motiejunas is a solid player, and he fell a long way to reach Minnesota. Motiejunas is good trade bait, and there is little doubt remaining that they will trade him for a guard.
The Timberwolves will look better with a guard, but for now, they will stay at the level of poor teams who won't make the playoffs. The Timberwolves do have the potential to make it to the playoffs in three years, and compete for a championship in five to seven.
Portland Trail Blazers- Nolan Smith
22 of 31The Portland Trail Blazers went 48-34 last season, and they made the playoffs.
The Trail Blazers selected Nolan Smith, the guard from Duke. Smith could play either point or shooting guard in the NBA.
Smith can score in bunches, but he also is good at getting others involved. Smith will fit in nicely with Portland, and this is a good pick.
The Trail Blazers will be a good team, and they will make the playoffs again next season. The team will not legitimately compete for a title for a few years though.
Denver Nuggets- Kenneth Faried
23 of 31The Denver Nuggets went 50-32 last season, and made the playoffs. Denver took Kenneth Faried with the 22nd pick in the draft.
Faried is a great rebounder who has athletic skill. Faried is a good forward, even if he is not very tall. Faried never gives up, and that makes up for his lack of height.
Denver needs to get extra possessions, and Faried does that for them. Coming from Morehead State, Faried is the NCAA's all-time leader in rebounds, and he is going to really help the Nuggets.
The Nuggets will be a good team again, but they will just barely make the playoffs because they will not have Carmelo Anthony for half of the season.
Houston Rockets- Nikola Mirotic
24 of 31The Houston Rockets had another first round pick, and they selected Nikola Mirotic to go along with Marcus Morris.
Mirotic is a good pick for down the road, because he won't be available for four years. Mirotic is a great player, and he gives them a replacement for Yao Ming.
A proposed trade that would send Mirotic to Minnesota for Johnny Flynn and Donatas Motiejunas, who would also be a replacement for Yao.
The Rockets are not trying to make it to the playoffs right now, and they won't for about three seasons, and they won't compete competitively for about six seasons.
Oklahoma City Thuner- Reggie Jackson
25 of 31The Oklahoma City Thunder selected point guard Reggie Jackson with the 24th pick in the draft.
Jackson is a very good player, and he showed us that during his time with Boston College. Jackson has a lot of NBA potential, but he was taken off the board for everyone except one team (the Thunder) in April.
We still have yet to see if he can do well, but he seems like the ype of player who can feed Kevin Durants the ball well.
The Thunder will make it to the playoffs again, but they won't truly compete for a title until next season.
Boston Celtics- Marshon Brooks
26 of 31The Boston Celtics went 56-26 last season, and they took Marshon Brooks with the 25th overall pick.
The Celtics need a big man, not a guard, which gives me the hint that they only took Brooks for trade bait. Brooks is a great scorer, and he should have been take before this point in the draft.
Brooks will be very good trade bait, and if they get a big man, the Celtics will be great.
Brooks is not a good defender, so he does not fit in with Boston, but he could fit in with the Kings. Or another offensive-oriented team.
The Celtics are ready to compete for an NBA title, and if they get a big man, they will.
Dallas Mavericks- Jordan Hamilton
27 of 31The Dallas Mavericks are the reigning NBA Champions, and they really only needed a small forward.
They found one in Texas small forward Jordan Hamilton who is an offensive threat. Hamilton is a great shooter, and he can also drive well.
The Mavericks just solidified their team further, and they are still a great team.
The Mavericks are ready to compete for a title now, and they just improved their chances greatly. They have the fifth best odds to win the title now.
New Jersey Nets- JaJuan Johnson
28 of 31The Nets selected JaJuan Johnson in order to trade him for Marshon Brooks who was drafted by the Celtics. This trade helps both teams because the Nets need a good guard to player along side Deron Williams.
Johnson is good inside and he will help the Celtics solidify their team. Brooks, on the other hand, is a good scorer, and he will help lighten the load from Devin Harris and Williams.
The Nets are almost ready to make it to the playoffs, and they will make it next season. The Nets will then compete for a championship in five years.
Chicago Bulls- Norris Cole
29 of 31The Chicago Bulls went 62-20 last season, the best record in the NBA.
The Bulls selected Norris Cole from Cleveland State in order to trade him to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Bulls will be receiving Nikola Mirotic, who was drafted by the Houston Rockets.
Mirotic is a great player and an excellent big man. Mirotic will help replace the injury-prone Carlos Boozer, and this move helps ensure that the Bulls will compete for years to come.
The Bulls are competing for a championship now, and while this does not improve their odds this season, it does down the road. The Bulls have a good shot at winning the title this season.
San Antonio Spurs- Cory Joseph
30 of 31The Spurs selected Cory Joseph from Texas. Joseph was a surprising pick, partially because he came out after only one season.
Joseph is a good defender, and he is a solid player overall. Joseph is an interesting pick, and I personally don't see any reason for them to draft him
The Spurs will remain a good team who will compete for a title again, but their odds did not improve at all.
Chicago Bulls- Jimmy Butler
31 of 31The Bulls had the last pick of the first round, and they took Jimmy Butler.
Butler is a very versatile player, and he will help the Bulls in any way necessary. Butler is good at rebounding and defending, and he can score when asked to.
Butler helps the Bulls because he is always going to work hard, and he can back up a few players.
The Bulls will remain in contention for a title, and they will for a few years.
