New Dodgers Owners: 10 People Who Could Buy the Los Angeles Dodgers

Jacob SmallJun 7, 2018

With the Dodgers' recent bankruptcy, Frank McCourt's ongoing divorce and Bud Selig openly trying to force a sale, the sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers seems imminent. With the Dodgers' rich history and large market, many billionaires and local celebrities will be lining up to try to buy the historic franchise.

These are the 10 people who are most likely to buy the Dodgers or become a minor investor.

Steve Garvey

1 of 10

Net Worth: Unknown, possibly even in debt.

Sports Ownership Experience: Was a consultant for the Dodgers, main duty was as greeter for VIP season-ticket holders.

Los Angeles Connection: Played for Dodgers.

Steve Garvey would not be a primary owner, as it is unknown what his net worth is; it is possible that he is even in debt. It is more likely that he would become a minority owner to add popularity to an ownership bid. He has been linked with Ron Burkle.

Magic Johnson

2 of 10

Net Worth: $500 million.

Sports Ownership Experience: Former minority owner of Los Angeles Lakers.

Los Angeles Connection: Played for Los Angeles Lakers.

Magic is one of the biggest names in Los Angeles sports to this day, but since he sold his minority share in the Lakers, he's had no official connection to it. He may be interested in becoming a minority owner to create a face for a corporate ownership bid.

Alec Gores

3 of 10

Net Worth: $1.5 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: None.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Beverly Hills.

Alec Gores has no ownership experience, and has little Los Angeles connection, but it is reported that he is very interested in buying the team. His brother Tom was also interested in buying the team, possibly with Alec, but has dropped out of the running after he purchased the Detroit Pistons.

Eli Broad

4 of 10

Net Worth: $5.8 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: None.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Los Angeles and has been part of several projects in the area including the Broad Art Center at UCLA.

Eli Broad almost bought the Dodgers last time they were for sale. During that bid, he had former Dodger owner Peter O'Malley as a minor investor and it was reported that he was planning on hiring someone to oversee baseball operations, acting merely as a financial backer.

He would be worth $1.2 billion more than the current wealthiest owner in baseball, so he should be a very good financial backer.

Alan Casden

5 of 10

Net Worth: $1.9 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: None.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Beverly Hills.

Alan Casden almost bought the Dodgers the last time they were for sale when Frank McCourt bought the team. Casden stated when he last tried to buy the team that he would destroy Dodger Stadium and build a new one downtown near the Staples Center.

As a land developer, this would be his largest contribution (or monstrosity, depending on your opinion) to the Dodger organization.

Mark Attanasio

6 of 10

Net Worth: $700 million.

Sports Ownership Experience: Owns the Milwaukee Brewers.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Los Angeles.

Attanasio currently owns the Brewers, but he lives in Los Angeles and may want to upgrade a larger market. He has denied that he wants to buy the team, but it is unlikely that he would tell a Milwaukee newspaper that he wants to leave until a deal is final.

Mark Cuban

7 of 10

Net Worth: $2.5 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: Owner of Dallas Mavericks.

Los Angeles Connection: None.

It is publicly known that Mark Cuban wants to buy a baseball team. There are some mixed signals coming from Cuban's camp, as he says he is reluctant to buy the team because of the giant mess they are in, but at the same time it appears that the role he could play of rescuing the Dodgers appeals to him.

Another roadblock is that MLB seems reluctant to take on Cuban, who is known to rock the boat a little, even though he is a great sports owner who could bring the Dodgers back into prominence.

In the end, while Cuban is probably the best owner in the mix, his reluctance to deal with the mess the McCourt has put the Dodgers in (including the possibility that McCourt will manage to retain control of the stadium and surrounding Dodger property, but not the team), along with MLB's reluctance to let him in, Mark Cuban will probably not end up owning the Dodgers.

Dennis Gilbert

8 of 10

Net Worth: Unknown, but was runner-up in the bidding for the Texas Rangers in 2009.

Sports Ownership Experience: Special assistant for Chicago White Sox.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Los Angeles.

Dennis Gilbert was an agent for marquee clients such as George Brett, Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling. After giving up being an agent, he became a special assistant for Jerry Reinsdorf, but remains a loyal Dodger fan, even owning season tickets. He was linked with the Rangers in 2009, but it is likely that he would prefer to own his favorite team.

His net worth is unknown, so it remains to be seen if he has enough money to be a principal owner, but with the marquee clients listed above, and other business ventures, it seems probable that he does.

Philip Anschutz

9 of 10

Net Worth: $7 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: Owns AEG, which owns parts or all of the Los Angeles Kings, three international hockey teams, three minor league hockey teams, the LA Galaxy, the Houston Dynamo, an international soccer team, the Los Angeles Lakers, 39 arenas (most notably Staples Center) and four stadiums.

Los Angeles Connection: Ownership share in local NBA, MLS and NHL teams.

Anschutz owns part of three professional sports teams in Los Angeles and may be looking to add the fourth. He has extensive sports management experience, a large amount of capital and good business experience. He is possibly the best fit for the Dodgers, but has shown no public interest in buying the team.

Ron Burkle

10 of 10

Net Worth: $3.2 billion.

Sports Ownership Experience: Part owner of Pittsburgh Penguins.

Los Angeles Connection: Lives in Beverly Hills.

Burkle lives in Beverly Hills, and was born in Los Angeles County. He owns the Pittsburgh Penguins and brought them from the brink of extinction to a Stanley Cup victory in 2009. He has been linked to buying the team with Steve Garvey, but is not committed to working with him.
