Tennessee Titans: What's Going on with Former Scarlet Knight Kenny Britt?
Every true Scarlet Knights fan recalls the 2008 football season like it was yesterday.
In the beginning, everyone was ready to write Rutgers off as the bottom feeder of the Big East…again.
Going 1-5 in their first six games, the season looked completely lost, especially with a significant portion of fans completely turning their backs on quarterback Mike Teel and head coach Greg Schiano.
However, one consistently bright spot was junior wide receiver Kenny Britt. Entering the season at just 19 years old, Britt was an absolute beast regardless of the defense he encountered.
While Britt did not cross the paint until Week 8 of the season (where he scored three touchdowns), Britt averaged seven catches and 95 yards per game in the first seven games of 2008.
For the record, those averages are based off of six games since Britt missed Week 4 against Morgan State due to injury.
So what’s the point of this nostalgic history lesson? The point is, this is when fans and analysts alike truly realized how special of a talent Kenny Britt was.
Britt silenced any naysayers by putting up premiere NFL wide receiver numbers his junior year in college.
He finished the season with 87 catches, 1,371 yards, and seven receiving touchdowns (Britt also scored a rushing touchdown in 2008).
This made Britt a no-brainer selection for First Team All Big-East.
Fast forward to today, where the Tennessee Titans premiere wide receiver has faced five legal charges in the past 17 months.
Unbelievable.
The Bayonne, NJ native has faced some pretty rough charges in 2011: eluding a police officer, careless driving, and resisting arrest.
Britt actually headlined ESPN three days in one week between June 8 and June 14. Britt, the first Scarlet Knight to ever go in the first round of the NFL draft, encountered the majority of his run-ins with the law in the Garden State.
However, in Tennessee, it was reported that he had two warrants out for his arrest. Britt is “suspected of providing inaccurate information on two separate driver’s license applications.”
What a shame for such a talented player with so much upside.
Britt’s most recent arrest involved being caught smoking weed, right in broad daylight at a car wash, and getting caught by some off duty police officers.
Back in October of 2010, Britt was allegedly involved in a bar room brawl, but no charges were ever formally charged.
While Britt is only 22 years old, the bottom line is that he is a professional athlete now. There is nothing wrong with going out and getting some drinks with friends, especially during a lockout where many teams are in a state of disarray.
But going out and partying with reckless abandon every weekend should no longer be a part of his life.
So being optimistic and assuming there is a season in 2011, which version of Kenny Britt will we see?
The player capable of scoring three touchdowns and gaining over 200 yards in one game, or a player who is cast off to the Oakland Raiders for his second chance in the league and largely forgotten about?
This writer certainly hopes for the former over the latter, but given the Titan wide receiver’s affinity for breaking the law recently, either option is a very possible reality.
