Could Damien Comolli Be Reunited with Arsène Wenger?

Shyam ParthasarathiOct 25, 2008

Every football club has a unique structure. There's a continental structure which involves what is now an infamous role known as a "Sporting Director" and another where a manager controls the club, top to bottom.

When Tottenham Hotspur decided to hire Damien Comolli and give him the role of Sporting Director, it sounded like a perfect idea. However, this is now a move that most Spurs fans will look back upon with a considerable amount of regret.

Comolli was given a free reign on transfers, with the likes of Martin Jol and Juande Ramos handling the coaching side of things. Clearly, Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy didn't know what he was doing.

It is true that Comolli did sign a considerable number of players who had very little use or didn't have enough quality, but who gave him the final nod to go ahead with those deals? Who gave him the authority in the first place to do such deals? It was Daniel Levy.

An inside joke among Arsenal fans suggested that Comolli, having spent seven years at Arsenal as a scout, would bring Spurs down from the inside. That proved to be true to some extent.

This is a man with serious pedigree, though. He has contacts all over Europe, and worked under Arsène Wenger at Monaco and Nagoya Grampus Eight before his stint at Arsenal.

He is credited with recommending the likes of Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboué, and Gaël Clichy to Arsenal. In fact, he played a role in Arsenal signing Thierry Henry, Robert Pirès, and Robin van Persie.

The reason for Damien Comolli's poor track record at Tottenham Hotspur was that he was given a responsibility without any accountability. He was able to bring in whomever he felt was talented, even though the managers didn't require those players. In fact, the manager was barely given a role in signing players.

It was a complete lack of structure and organization on the part of Spurs which has led to this collapse. By hiring Harry Redknapp, Daniel Levy doesn't seem to be in a mood for experimenting with a continental style of management anymore.

Tottenham fans may now be incredibly happy to see the back of Damien Comolli, but, strangely enough, Arsène Wenger might be equally happy to bring him back to Arsenal.

Comolli is still held in high regard by the Arsenal manager, and his return will not harm Arsenal's scouting structure in any shape or form.

Perhaps working under his mentor again could just be the catalyst to re-ignite his career.
