Browns Suspend Kellen Winslow -- Thought About Trading Disgruntled TE

Bob CunninghamOct 21, 2008

The Cleveland Browns have suspended their Pro Bowl TE Kellen Winslow for one game without pay.

The given reason is "conduct detrimental to the team", said GM Phil Savage.

GM Phil Savage also said in a statement given to the media:

"Kellen has expressed his desire to be a productive member of the Cleveland Browns. His comments and behavior on Sunday evening, however, were unwarranted, inappropriate, and unnecessarily disparaging to our organization. His statements brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad."

Winslow first became critical of the team after the 14-11 loss to the Washington Redskins Sunday night. He said he felt as thought he was treated "like a piece of meat" by the organization, complaining that he had received word from Romeo Crennell and WR coach Alfredo Roberts during his three-night stay in the hospital for a staph infection, but not GM Phil Savage.

"I heard from (head coach) Romeo Crennel and I heard from my position coach (Alfredo Roberts) when I was in the Clinic. I heard from my teammates, but I never heard from the main man, (GM) Phil Savage, and that really disappoints me. Sometimes I don't even feel a part of this team."

Winslow will not be available to the team for their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and has also been told to stay away from Cleveland Browns' facilities until his suspension is up. Which is Monday, the 26th.

As part of the suspension, Winslow will not receive his game check. A $235,294 crack in his bank account.

This all comes after Winslow spent three nights in a Cleveland hospital while being treated for a staph infection, a problem he encountered a few years back as well. After his motorcycle accident in 2005, Winslow caught a staph infection that also required hospitalization.

Winslow, along with the Browns organization, recently confirmed that the "undisclosed illness" keeping Winslow out of action was in fact a staph infection.

Losing Winslow is a big hit for the Browns, but something that was necessary.

Coach Romeo Crennell said Winslow is understandably frustrated, but that he should have handled the situation in a different way. Complaining to the media about your team before actually dealing with the team is never a good move and will usually result in some sort of backlash from the team.

The suspension is only the latest in Kellen Winslow related news.

Adam Schefter has reported that the Browns quietly dangled Kellen Winslow as trade bait before the week six trade deadline.

Word from the Browns camp is that they did not receive an offer that they felt compensated them for Winslow.

Kudos to the Browns for being able to keep a big story under wraps for once.
