Fantasy Football: Week Seven Hangover

Collin HagerOct 21, 2008
Hard to believe that many leagues are already halfway through the regular season. I don't know about you, but football always seems to move quickly because it's once a week. A couple injuries marred an otherwise solid week for many owners. Let's take a look back at what went on with the Hangover.
Fantasy Up
  1. Steven Jackson- Jackson has had two 100-yard games in his last four, and is heading to New England to face a defense that teams have proven you can run on. Jackson obviously blew up this past week, and a repeat performance isn't likely. He's still jumped back on the map, and that's a good thing for owners.
  2. Owen Daniels - We've been waiting through half a season for Schaub to find Daniels, and he did so twice this past week. Daniels is a solid red-zone target for the Houston offense and should be an easier call for fantasy owners moving forward.
  3. Mewelde Moore - You might say that many people saw this coming. Moore went for over 100 yards and had no problems locating the end zone for the Steelers. We still have no set timetable for Parker. It could be this week, it could be next, but Moore should be started in the mean time.
  4. Thomas Jones - Yet another running back enjoying his time against the AFC West. He busted out for over 100 yards, and gets to face Kansas City this week. Owners should be GIDDY at that possibility.
  5. Calvin Johnson - Yours truly was a little nervous as to how defenses would treat Johnson without Roy Williams on the other side of the field. Johnson already silenced some of his critics by turning in a solid day. When you're the only game in town, your quarterback will find a way to get you the ball.

Fantasy Down

  1. Jason Campbell - How many stinkers in a row is this guy going to put up before we all jump off the ship? Campbell won't start himself in his fantasy league, so we shouldn't either.
  2. Eli Manning - We can say that Cleveland has a strong pass defense, and maybe he just struggled against them. Problem is, it's tough to make that argument against San Francisco. Manning looked awful, and owners were treated to a complete disappointment.
  3. Reggie Wayne - As Peyton Manning goes, so goes Wayne. He had only two catches against a physical Packers secondary. Something isn't right with how inconsistent this offense is. He needs to be started because of his quarterback and his potential, but looking for buyers might not be bad as trade deadlines approach.
  4. Ronnie Brown - You can run against a lot of teams, but the Ravens aren't going to be one of them. The Wildcat was put on hold for 295 yards passing by Pennington. Likely not the case every week, but we should note how the Dolphins handled their possessions against such a tough front.
  5. Terrell Owens - Like this is going to go over well with Owens. Brad Johnson did not look good. As long as he's under center, we need to downgrade all receiving options in the Dallas offense. Cross your fingers that Romo can be back quickly.

You Shouldn't Trust the Performance of...

...LenDale White. There are a lot to choose from this week, but he takes the cake. White posted three touchdowns and 180 yards against the Chiefs. Unfortunately for White, he doesn't face them every week.

Up until Sunday, his longest run for a touchdown had been 20 yards. He put up an 80-yard run, but was nearly caught from behind in the process. Chris Johnson is still the man here.

Who else shouldn't you trust? Matt Cassel, Derrick Mason, Javon Walker, and Nate Washington.

I'm Most Concerned About...

...the Washington Offense. Yes, Moss was better this week, but he still only ended up with 75 yards and a touchdown on five catches. Campbell has looked just plain rough, and Cooley has been a disappointment to all owners, with the exception of one stand-out week.

Defenses know they're going to get a heavy dose of Clinton Portis, but it hasn't stopped him from some of the best games we've seen in a long time out of his legs.

With Campbell only throwing for around 200 yards a game, owners need to re-evaluate how they look at the receivers that are spending time trying to catch his passes.

Workin' the Wire

  • Deuce McAllister/Pierre Thomas - As we talked about yesterday, these two will get the cracks to replace Reggie Bush. McAllister looks like he'll be the most useful every-down back, but don't doubt Thomas. He should be able to steal touchdowns in the same way he took them from Bush in the early going.
  • Justin Fargas- Michael Bush was non-existent, and he's still a better runner than McFadden at this point. Not only that, he plays in the AFC West. There isn't a team there that has considered stopping a running back yet.
  • Ben-Jarvus Green-Ellis/LaMont Jordan - Sammy Morris went out with an injury at the half yesterday, and Green-Ellis saw most of the duty in the second half. He was an undrafted player but could play a role if Morris' injury is more serious. With Maroney being placed on IR, Jordan could also play a factor once he's healthy. Keep an eye on what happens with Morris this week.
  • Josh Morgan - Morgan had five catches for 86 yards against a tough Giants pass defense. This week, he draws Seattle. After a bye, he'll get Arizona, St. Louis, and Dallas. None of those teams are going to be particularly tough through the air.
  • Donnie Avery - Avery has nine catches for 138 yards in the last two weeks. He's going up against a Patriots secondary that has been beaten through the air a fair amount. Each week he sees more passes heading his way. Those in need of a receiver should take notice.
