Florida Jumps to No. 2 in OCGR By Resting Up

Scott GlesnerOct 20, 2008

There was a lot of movement in this week's OCGR, from Missouri moving out of the standings to Ohio State's jump from No. 17 to No. 7.  Here are the OCGR standings for this week.

(Dropped from ratings: No. 7 Missouri, No. 11 California, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 19 Virginia Tech, No. 20 Kansas, and No. 24 Vanderbilt)

Texas has completely separated itself from everyone else.  Their 84.16 rating is one of the highest the OCGR has ever seen.  Amazingly, it has room to grow with games against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.  A loss at this time would not hurt them with such a big lead.

Florida is the surprise of the week, edging out USC by 0.02 points.  Ohio State, LSU, and Pittsburgh are the big movers of the week, with Ohio State and LSU jumping 10 spots, as well as Pitt going from not rated to 12th.

With the BCS debut, let's look at the OCGR Top 10 versus the BCS Top 10.

Nine of 10 teams show up in both the OCGR Top 10 and the BCS Top 10.  However, there are three noticeable discrepancies between the two systems: Florida, Alabama, and Texas Tech.

Florida is strong in all the categories for the OCGR, but the BCS voters still look at the Ole Miss loss, and the computer polls hit them hard.

The voters and the computers love the Crimson Tide.  The OCGR is not that in love with them.  With the computer polls mainly looking at wins and losses, they cannot discern between handling an opponent and struggling with one.  The voters still think that Clemson victory is strong, as well as the first half against Georgia.

As for Texas Tech, the voters are enamored more with the zero in the loss column than anything else.  The OCGR does not look too fondly on teams who play two FCS teams—thus, the No. 17 ranking.

Finally, here are the conference rankings for this week.  There is not much of a change since most of the out-of-conference games have been played.  The SEC and Big 12 still reign supreme.
