Liverpool FC Transfers: The Players Who Should Be First out the Door This Summer

Cian FaheyMay 20, 2011

It's no secret that Liverpool FC need to improve their squad.  Despite the renewed optimism at Anfield because of the arrival of Kenny Dalglish, there remains many pieces of the team who are not good enough to lead them to where the club wants to be.

Dalglish will also be looking to mold the team in his image after signing a three-year contract.

Here are five players who should be leaving Liverpool as soon as possible.

Paul Konchesky

While Roy Hodson deserves a lot of credit for signing an eventual player of the year in Raul Meireles, his signing of Paul Konchesky was unforgivable.

Konchesky at the time was seen as an average player in a good but not great Fulham team.  He looked out of his depth in a Liverpool shirt, lacking both the pace and attacking ability required of a wing back.  Even his frailties in defense were exposed after he left the comfortable system of Fulham who tend not to be too adventurous.

It was telling that Konchesky couldn't even find a Premiership club to be loaned out to when he eventually landed in Nottingham Forrest for the season.

Jamie Carragher

It hurts me to say this but it's time for Carragher to move on from Liverpool.

He won't be a first choice defender next season because of his dwindled pace.  He simply cannot perform at the highest level anymore and was exposed more last season than in the previous three to four.

Carragher is a living legend for Liverpool but he has previously stated that he wouldn't want to be on the bench if he could start somewhere else.  He's 33 years old, which is surprisingly even older than Soitiris Kyrgiakos.

Should Carragher be willing to play the Kyrgiakos role, as first option from the bench, then he should be kept.  But, in reality, he is too competitive and passionate to do that.

Jamie Carragher will always be a hero to Liverpool fans and this is no slight against him at all.  It is a revelation that he was able to perform at such a high level for so long.

While many on this list should be pushed out the door, it should simply be held open for Carragher to proudly walk through it.

Christian Poulsen

Much like Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen was a cheap signing for Roy Hodgson with even cheaper talent.

Poulsen was deemed to be not good enough for Juventus in the Italian league.  The Italian league isn't exactly stellar in comparison to the Premier League, which made this signing suspect from the beginning.

He was obviously a favorite of Hodgson who looked to play him regularly before Kenny Dalglish arrived and he was doomed to the training pitch for the year.

Joe Cole

Joe Cole appeared initially to be quite a coup for Liverpool FC last summer.  Cole was highly sought after as a free agent by multiple teams before eventually choosing to leave London and head north.

Unfortunately, there wasn't even a honeymoon period with Cole.  He was sent off in his first Premier League outing against Arsenal and never hit his stride for the club.

His inability to start for the team on a regular basis represented a startling fall from grace for a player who is capped over 50 times for his country.  Cole's lack of pace was surprising but his lack of ability on the ball was simply startling.

He didn't impact many games whether it be coming from the bench or starting.  He finished the season with only 17 appearances and two goals to his name—not exactly what the club had expected when they signed him to what was reportedly a huge contract.

Milan Jovanovic

Another player re-signed to the training pitch.  However, this one wasn't signed by Roy Hodgson. The final imprint of Rafa Benitez' tenure at Anfield comes in the form of the Serbian forward/winger (unless you want to count Danny Wilson who signed at the same time).

Jovanovic never looked good enough for Liverpool.  He did show more than Joe Cole early in the year, but his brain-dead running with the ball and lack of an end product made him just another poor Benitez signing.

Jovanovic suffered a similar fate to Christian Poulsen when he was stapled to the bench under Kenny Dalglish.  He is a dead wood player now who will definitely be moving on in the summer.

At 30 years of age, it's not like he is going to drastically improve in the future either.
