Fantasy Football Week Seven Recap

Michael WhooleyOct 19, 2008

This past week's episode of Southpark focused around Cartman's fears of losing a fight to a girl, and it got me to thinking: What is the fantasy football equivalent?

Obviously, some men still find losing to a girl in fantasy football embarrassing. After all, sports are supposed to be a guy's domain. But, trust me, I know a lot of women (i.e. the Fantasy Football Librarian) that know a whole lot about sports and a lot of guys who don't, so that doesn't fly.

Then, it dawned on me, the fantasy football equivalent to losing a fight to a girl is losing a week against an opponent playing a man down. Unfortunately, unless Jay Cutler comes down with a flu before Monday Night's game, I will be the victim of this embarrassing tragedy.

But, there's always Week Eight. However, before we get there, let's recap some of the bigger stories from Week Seven in the Week Seven Weekly Words.

--------------------

Titans Two-Step

It’s been no secret that the Tennessee Titans’ bread and butter has been their running game. In fact, while the Titans ranked 25th in the league in pass offense, averaging just 164.7 passing yards per game, heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, they were No. 12 in rush offense, putting up 119 rush yards per game to go along with seven rushing scores.

Thus, their matchup Sunday with the Chiefs, who ranked dead last against the run entering the weekend, had Chris Johnson and LenDale White’s owners salivating.

The Titans’ twosome didn’t disappoint. Putting up 22 fantasy points on 168 yards rushing and a score, Chris Johnson continued his stellar rookie season, with his fourth double-digit performance of the year and his first 20+-point fantasy outing of his career.

However, even with the 22 points, Johnson was not the top fantasy performer on the Titans as running mate, LenDale White, totaled a full 10 points more than Johnson. White tallied 32 fantasy points on 149 rush yards and three scores.

The three touchdowns give White eight on the year, and more can be coming in the coming weeks as the Titans’ will face both the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers over the next two weeks, neither of which has a particularly strong rush defense. The Titans twosome will continue to make for solid RB2 plays.

Jackson Jumps Starts Rams’ Offense

Through five games, the St. Louis Rams managed to put up a paltry 62 points, an average of 12.4 points per game. A large reason the team was sitting with just one W in the win column heading into Week Seven.

But points weren’t hard to come by for the Rams this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, as they lit up the scoreboard for 34 points in a 34-14 victory. Leading the charge was stud running back, Steven Jackson. The only must play left from the Rams, Jackson went for 160 rushing yards and three rushing TDs. Expect interim head coach Jim Haslett to continue to ride the hot hand the rest of the season.

Vikings-Bears Shootout?!

Defense! That was how the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears were supposed to win games this season. And, it made sense with what they had on paper. No one was going to confuse either team’s offensive rosters with that of an offensive juggernaut, especially the Bears.

I mean, at least the Vikings had Adrian Peterson going for them. The most recognizable name on the Bears’ offensive roster heading into 2008 was probably QB Rex Grossman. So, the 41-48 shootout these teams were involved in during Week Seven was a bit of a surprise.

In all, 11 offensive players from the Vikings-Bears matchup reached the double-digit plateau. While the Bears got the real victory, the Vikings did have six of those 11 to the Bears’ five. Reaching the 10+ point mark for the Vikings were RB Adrian Peterson (24), WR Bernard Berrian (14), Chester Taylor (13), TE Visanthe Shiancoe (12), K Ryan Longwell (12), and QB Gus Frerotte (11).

The Bears to do so were QB Kyle Orton (17), WR Marty Booker (13), TE Greg Olsen (13), RB Matt Forte (12), and K Robbie Gould (12).

Now, these two teams won’t be putting up 40+ points each and every week, but they have proven beyond a doubt that they’re not just going to leave games in their defenses hands. Both teams have been able to put points on the board from the offensive side of the ball, making many members of their offensive rosters worthy of fantasy consideration.

Favre Faltering

Since scorching the Arizona Cardinals for 289 passing yards and six TDs in Week Four, Favre has gone for just eight fantasy points in two games. During that span, Favre has thrown just one TD, while turning the ball over five total times. Favre has also failed to reach the 200-yard plateau in either of the two games.

Granted, the name of Brett Favre resonates loudly in the fantasy football world, and it’s only natural that it does, as it has been a key component of the game for so many years now.

But, fantasy owners need to be weary of being blinded by the name. Take away the 33 fantasy point performance against Arizona, and Favre is averaging under 10 fantasy points a game, coming in at 9.3. By no means is Favre a guaranteed start each and every week, and you owe it to yourself to weigh your QB options carefully before placing Favre in your lineup.
