NHL Playoffs: Boston Bruins Rookie Tyler Seguin Has Historic Night in Game 2

Nicholas GossMay 18, 2011

Boston Bruins rookie forward Tyler Seguin became an instant hero in Tuesday night's Game 2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, accomplishing feats many of the famous Bruins of the past can't say they've achieved.

Seguin scored two goals in the 6-5 victory and earned two assists, bringing his playoff scoring total to six points in two games. All of it has happened in this Eastern Conference Finals series, the only two playoff games of Seguin's young career.

During a historic night in Boston, the 17,565 fans cheering in TD Garden began chanting, "Seguin, Seguin, Seguin!"

It was a gesture that Seguin himself enjoyed. "Yeah, I did feel that. And obviously it's a great compliment whenever you have great fan support. So I definitely appreciate that," Seguin said in an ESPN article by Scott Burnside last updated on May 18.

Bruins fans have been begging for head coach Claude Julien to put Seguin on the ice in the playoffs, but his inexperience at the NHL level led Seguin to be a healthy scratch for the first two rounds.

After Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was diagnosed with a concussion during the Flyers series and was declared unable to play in at least the first game of the Eastern Finals, Seguin's opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage had come.

Seguin's four points in the second period of Game 2 tied a team record for most points in a single period of playoff hockey, an accomplishment Bruins legends Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and Cam Neely never achieved.

When Bruins head coach Claude Julien was asked after the Game 1 loss last Saturday if Seguin would be on the power play for Game 2, he replied, "No comment."

Seguin got his chance on the Bruins power play in Game 2, and was very effective. He helped a unit that has struggled mightily this postseason by dishing out two assists on the power play, both in the second period.

Both assists happened on goals by his linemate Michael Ryder, too.

Seguin's first goal was a thing of beauty; it was a Bobby Orr-esque goal.

Seguin got the puck around center ice and sped past two Lightning defenders with his great quickness and completely fooled Tampa goalie Dwayne Roloson with an awesome deke (see video).

His second goal was a snipe to the left of Roloson from a pass by Nathan Horton.

Seguin's energy, speed and goal scoring saved the Bruins season in a game where their defense and usually reliable goalie Tim Thomas played poorly.

The Bruins' dismal power play, which has been historically weak this postseason, saw signs of life with Seguin operating it.

With the possibility of Bergeron being able to return to the Bruins lineup for Game 3, Seguin's play in the first two games of this series has made him immune from being a scratch again.

It's safe to say Claude Julien will not let Seguin sit in the press box in Tampa and watch his teammates again.

In Game 2 Seguin played like a veteran who is used to playing in big games, or a kid who grew up before our eyes, clearly demonstrating what Bruins fans can look forward to for many years to come.
