Cricket : 2011 County Championship Division One, Round Five
Lancashire are the only unbeaten team left in Division One, but Nottinghamshire lead the way despite defeat in a round which will be remembered for Warwickshire being deducted eight points for a poor pitch.
Nottinghamshire stay top despite losing to Sussex in a televised match at Hove.
Sussex posted 304 batting first, as Chris Nash made 93 but Samit Patel's 3-37 overshadowed Graeme Swann (2-69) and Stuart Broad's (2-70) return to the Nottinghamshire side.
Broad and Swann made ducks as Nottinghamshire collapsed from 132-4 to 145 all out. Only Samit Patel (63), Adam Voges (41) and Akhil Patel (24) scored more than six. James Anyon was the pick of the bowlers with 4-52 but Monty Panesar (3-11) and Rana Naved (3-31) provided good support.
Following on, the current champions showed fighting spirit as they posted 342 but despite Voges (58), Samit Patel (55) and Andre Adams (64) all passing 50, none of them went on to a match-saving knock. The away side weren't helped by losing Neil Edwards retired hurt second ball, as he was hit on the elbow.
James Anyon's 4-104 and Panesar's 2-70 from 36 overs left Sussex needing 184 to win. They knocked off the runs for the loss of only one wicket as Ed Joyce hit 88 not out to send Sussex sixth in the table.
Warwickshire are third after a 218-run victory over bottom side Worcestershire at Edgbaston but three Worcestershire batsmen were deemed unable to bat the second time around due to injury.
Warwickshire, who have appealed the decision to dock them eight points due to a poor pitch, posted 382 in their first innings. Mohammed Yousuf hit 109, Tim Ambrose 58 and Rikki Clarke 56, while Damien Wright took 5-83.
Worcestershire could only make 228 in response as opener Matthew Pardoe hit 58 but lacked continued support. Chris Metters 6-65 an impressive way to mark a first-class debut.
On a deteriorating pitch, the home side declared on 173-8, with Yousuf making 68. Gareth Andrew's 3-41 the pick of the bowlers.
Worcestershire were set 328 for victory and after slipping to 57-6 the result was a foregone conclusion, as Naqaash Tahir took 4-36.
However, Vikram Solanki retired hurt on Day 3 after he was struck on the back of the head from a Boyd Rankin delivery and was taken straight to hospital, but thankfully he received the all-clear and may have been able to bat if required.
Ben Scott was unbeaten on 31 when he retired hurt with the score on 109-7 and Alan Richardson had a leg injury and was not sent out, which gave the home side victory by 218 runs.
Warwickshire deserved the victory and Worcestershire have now lost all their county championship games, but this match will be remembered for the behaviour of the pitch rather than the quality of the cricket.
Fourth-placed Durham and fifth-placed Somerset drew at the Riverside in a high-scoring encounter.
Somerset piled on 610-6 declared, Nick Compton smashed 254 not out, Marcus Trescothick hit 144 and Peter Trego 98. Callum Thorp (2-70) recorded the best bowling figures.
Michael Di Venuto's 86 wasn't enough for Durham to avoid the follow-on as they posted only 237. Gemaal Hussain's 4-47 and Steve Kirby's 3-57 did the most the damage.
Following on, Durham showed a lot of resilience to make 489-6 before the match was ended as a draw.
Ben Stokes hit 120 and Di Venuto 112 to ensure the draw despite Kirby's (3-84) best efforts.
Yorkshire are third from bottom after one win in five games, while Hampshire are yet to win as the sides drew at Headingley.
The home side recovered from 143-6 to post 355 thanks to Tim Bresnan's 87 and Jonny Bairstow's 83. Dominic Cork's 5-75 the pick of the Hampshire bowlers.
Hampshire could only make 232 in their first innings response, with Johann Myburgh (64) top scoring. Ajmal Shahzad took 5-65 to put Yorkshire in control.
Yorkshire declared on 165-8 as Kabir Ali (4-43) and Cork (3-51) restricted the home side's push for victory.
Chasing 289 for victory, Hampshire were 153-8 when the match ended as a draw. Sean Ervine's 55, Kabir Ali's five not out from 54 balls and Danny Briggs's six not out from 42 balls helped save the game for the away side.
Bresnan's 3-18, Adil Rashid's 2-22, Steven Patterson's 2-19 and Ryan Sidebottom's 1-19 were not enough to give Yorkshire victory.
May 18 sees the start of the first Roses encounter of the season as Lancashire host Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire face Warwickshire, Sussex play Somerset and Worcestershire are at home to Durham.
