Tiger Woods: Paul Azinger Says Tiger Needs Professional Help

Tom EdringtonMay 13, 2011

Paul Azinger still firmly believes Tiger Woods will break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major championships.

Azinger also believes that Tiger needs a shrink.

Azinger opened up about Woods and others Friday morning during a visit to the Golf Channel and the former Ryder Cup captain is never without an opinion.

"I think he's really worried about this one," Azinger said of Thursday's showing by Woods at the Players Championship.

Even as he said that, Azinger still believes Woods will surpass the Nicklaus record.

"I think he could have the knee replaced and still break Jack's record," Azinger declared without hesitation.

Woods still has his mind, Azinger believes and that's a huge factor.

"If Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer had Tiger's mind, they'd be superstars beyond what they are," he said.

Still, 'Zinger did have his own "Zinger."

"I think he needs help. He needs some professional help. He needs to have a shoulder to cry on," is how the former PGA champ put it.

But what about those members of the Tiger Woods "camp."

"His handlers all have alterior motives," Azinger said, pulling no punches. "The almighty dollar."

Azinger felt that Woods is a lonely guy without any close friends.

"[Mark] O'Meara is his best friend and he didn't see him for five months after the accident," Azinger recalled of the moment that sent Woods' life into total turmoil.

"He's angry about a lot of things," Azinger said, sounding like a psychologist.

But he was firmly in Woods' corner when it came to the pursuit of golf's Holy Grail.

"I'm not saying it's easy," Azinger said of the quest for 19 majors. "Nothing's been handed to Tiger Woods. He's earned everything."
