10 Coolest Crowd Coordinations in Sports

Kelsey GivensMay 20, 2011

Fans love to prove how dedicated and devoted they are to their team, many times trying to outdo fans of the other team by coordinating their outfits or actions during a certain game.

From wearing all one color to chanting to singing the national anthem, fans love to act in unison as they come out to support their team.

Even if the idea of coordinating a crowd has become slightly stale or overdone, fans still willingly jump at the chance to be part of something bigger when it comes to showing their love for sports.

So here is a list of the 10 best crowd coordination moments in sports.

No. 10: FSU Seminole War Chant

1 of 10

This is one of the most well-known and potentially irritating crowd coordination moments at any given time in sports.

Used by Florida State University fans for just about every sporting event their team is involved in, this chant is typically started by a small group before being picked up by the entire crowd.

No. 9: Winnipeg “White Out”

While this team may now be defunct, its legend lives on through the tradition of the White Out.

What began as a response to the Calgary Flames "C of Red," this tradition called for fans of the Jets to adorn all white to support their team in the first games of the playoffs.

Fans seemed to really enjoy this tradition, as can be seen by the look of pure joy on the face of the gentleman in this picture.

No. 8: Fans of Michigan and Western Michigan Sing Journey Together

3 of 10

Ever been to a party where "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey came on and everyone stopped what they were doing to all sing the song together?

Well, that's pretty much what happened at this Michigan vs. Western Michigan football game. You can hear in this clip the entire crowd singing along to the song.

Kind of gives you chills, doesn't it?

During Game 5 of this series between the Thunder and the Grizzlies, Oklahoma destroyed Memphis, 99-72.

And they did so with the support of their fans who all donned white t-shirts given to them upon arrival at the game.

It was kind of awesome to see an entire arena dressed in white, but a little less impressive than the well-known Penn State White Out that happens at least once a year at the school's football games.

No. 6: Ohio State's Stadium O-H-I-O Chant

5 of 10

Almost every team on the planet has some kind of call and response cheer for their team where one side of the stadium begins the cheer and the other side finishes it.

Ohio State takes this to a whole new level by having the four sides of the stadium each yell a different letter to spell out Ohio.

This chant not only pumps up the OSU players, but really intimidates the other team as well.

No. 5: Miami Heat Fans Sing National Anthem

6 of 10

In recognition of one of the world's most wanted and hated individuals being taken out by the United States and in recognition of the service of the armed forces, the Miami Heat had their fans sing the national anthem before Game 2.

It's awe-inspiring to hear that many people all singing the anthem together.

No. 4: Calgary Flames “C of Red”

A tradition that started many years ago, the Calgary "C of Red" is a tradition where Flames fans all wear red to create a sea of red in the crowd.

This tradition served two purposes:

1. To support the Flames, and

2. to intimidate the other team.

Looking at this photograph, it looks like almost anyone would get distracted being surrounded by that much red.

No. 3: Penn State White Out

One of the most well-known fan coordination moments in sports, the Penn State White Out is a huge tradition for the school and its athletic programs.

Between how loud these fans can get and how loyally they stick to this tradition, they are anything but just a sea of white noise in the stands.

No. 2: Juventus Club Fans Coordinate to Make Sign

Now this—this is an impressive show of coordination by fans of the Juventus Club.

For this soccer game, these fans somehow were able to organize and not only create this massive and impressively legible sign and were able to keep cheering as well, really coming out to support their team.

How cool would it be if every sporting event had almost all fans in the crowd doing something like this?

But I guess if this were commonplace among most sports, it would't be as impressive or awe-inspiring as it is in this photo, now would it?

No. 1: USA Chant at Mets vs. Phillies Game

10 of 10

The death of Osama bin Laden is a major historical event in the history of the United States.

On the night that this news broke, the Mets and Phillies were tied in the ninth inning, 1-1, thus reading on the scoreboard 9-1-1.

As fans began getting tweets and updates on their phones about the news, it seems everyone at once just began chanting U-S-A.

It was chilling and inspiring to see so many people, from both teams playing, cheering for a common cause, especially when it was coordinated on the spot like that.
