Cricket: 2011 County Championship Division 2, Round 4

Joe WhitworthMay 9, 2011

Middlesex lost their 100 percent record, but still sit top the table.

Kent, one of last year's relegated sides, meanwhile find themselves bottom of the Division 2 table after four games.

Middlesex remain top despite the fact that their draw with Gloucestershire halted their run of three successive victories.

Batting first, Gloucestershire posted 358 as Chris Taylor top-scored with 117, Will Gidman hit 67 and Hamish Marshall hit 62. For the away side, Toby Roland-Jones picked up 5-91.

Middlesex replied with 406, with Chris Rogers making 87 and Neil Dexter hitting 72. Jon Lewis, 5-65, was the best of the home side's bowlers.

Gloucestershire scored 347 in their second innings with Will Gidman (93), Ian Cockbain (72) and Taylor (60) helping to boost the score.

Corey Collymore's 4-57, however, helped Middlesex dismiss the hosts.

Chasing 300, Middlesex ran out of time on 123-4, with Lewis' 3-35 ensuring a draw was the result.

Northamptonshire are second after two wins and two draws following a five-wicket victory against Kent.

Kent batted first at Canterbury and managed 280, thanks in large part to Martin van Jaarsveld's 67. All the bowlers got among the wickets—the pick of the bunch being James Middlebrook's 3-42.

Northamptonshire piled on 493 as Andrew Hall hit 100, Chaminda Vaas hit 66 and Niall O'Brien hit 62. Adam Riley, on first-class debut, took 4-145 from his 34 overs.

Darren Stevens knocked off 143 from 137 balls to lift Kent up to 320 as they at least ensured the away side had to bat again. Jack Brooks (3-56) and Vaas (3-70) each took three wickets.

Chasing 108 to win, Northamptonshire wobbled to their target to win with five wickets in hand. James Tredwell took 3-41 but the total was too small to defend for bottom side Kent.

Surrey are fourth after their first triumph of the season, following two draws and a defeat, as they beat Leicestershire by 215 runs.

Surrey posted 294 in their first innings, as Tom Maynard hit 70, but Claude Henderson's 3-41 restricted the home side.

Leicestershire could only manage 183 in reply, with Wayne White top-scoring with 46 as Stuart Meaker claimed 4-43.

Surrey piled on 311-6 and declared the second time around as Mark Ramprakash hit 91, with Henderson again (4-91) the pick of the bowlers.

Chasing an unlikely 423 to win, James Taylor's 52 and Matthew Boyce's 41 offered resistance but Surrey bowled out the away side for 207. Jade Dernbach's 5-41 ensured a 215-run victory and sent Leicestershire down to second-bottom with one win, one draw and two defeats.

Derbyshire host Essex and Glamorgan face Kent from May 10, while Gloucestershire play Northamptonshire from May 11.
