Dallas Cowboys: 10 Breaks They Must Catch to Make a Super Bowl Run
Now that we’ve gotten the madness of the Dallas Cowboys playing the Super Bowl in their home stadium out of the way we can finally focus on what’s important: Will Dallas ever change their uniforms?
Last year the ‘Boys buckled like a pair of Rex Ryan’s pants the morning before Thanksgiving, they just could take the pressure of trying to play in the Super Bowl on their home turf. There is more to this story but basically Dallas couldn’t cut the mustard.
There was the Tony Romo injury, the continued decline of the offensive line, the incredible shrinking defensive secondary, the loss of Wade Phillips, and just so much more.
The 2010 Dallas Cowboys are now a thing of the past and all ‘Boys fans, and staff and players included, have turned their eyes to the 2011 season. With a new defensive coordinator and head coach the possibilities are again endless for this bunch of Texas Cowboys.
What will it take for this new and improved version of the Dallas Cowboys to compete in the rough and tough National Football Conference and eventually the Super Bowl?
Well, its going to take a lot to put it simply but here are 10 things that must happen in order for Dallas and Jerry to make it up to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl.
Tony Romo Must Remain Healthy
1 of 10
Yes ladies and gentleman in order for the Dallas Cowboys to have a real shot at making the Super Bowl, let alone winning it, Tony must play all 16 games.
Whether it’s the fullback or the offensive line, some entity that the Cowboys employ must protect Romo and his shoulder.
Dallas doesn’t make it without the aging star and if Jason fails to properly protect the soon to be groom then this season may be one of the last for Tony in Cowboytown.
A Balanced Offensive Attack
2 of 10
I know that we’ve been screaming this for years but last season after Romo went down with his injury it seemed that head coach Jason Garrett followed that philosophy.
Balance is such a great thing to have on offense and when Dallas does it they do it might well.
With three starter-quality running backs on the current roster there is no reason to believe that Dallas will revert back to the Cowboys of old.
Philadelphia Has an off-Season
3 of 10
Ha-ha, get it? Philly has an “offseason?” You know, like they have—ahh forget it.
Anyway the flying Michael Vicks should be even stronger next season because Vick has another year under his belt with Andy Reid. But the Eagles sometimes struggled on defense and Philly still make a lot of questionable offensive calls.
If the Eagles some kind of way fall off a cliff then that’s an easier path created to Indy for the Dallas Cowboys.
Mike Jenkins Returns to Pro Bowl Form
4 of 10
I’m going to say that Jenkins had an off year last year. His technique was sloppy and it seemed to the untrained eye that he flat gave up on some plays and took to many unnecessary and poorly calculated chances last season.
Mike’s leash will be about the size of my pinky finger next season and he knows it. If Jenkins returns to even a shell of his 2009 self the Cowboys have a puncher's chance.
Tyron Smith Plays Well as Right Tackle
5 of 10
Smith is going to start, not much mystery to that one. Its just a matter of where the young fellow will play on the line. He said that he was told the Cowboys want him to play on the left side but its believed that he will stay on the right side of the line.
No matter where he plays on the offensive front, if he plays well then Dallas has an automatic win under their belt behind Smith.
If he turns into a Pro Bowler his first season then the rest of the NFC better watch out.
Dallas Signs Michael Huff or Nnamdi Asomugha
6 of 10
Huff has the better chance of becoming a Cowboy than Asomugha but both would be nice. Dallas needs a little help back there and Huff could provide the veteran presence the team lacks.
Cutting 20 or 30 yards off their passing yards allowed per game is worth a win or two and adding Huff may just do that.
The Injury Bug Misses Valley Ranch
7 of 10
Injuries are a part of the game of football and Dallas will be hit with them again, but maybe not like it did last season.
Losing Romo was the icing on top of the cake for the Cowboys last season because the cake was already baked and finished by the time he lost his season.
But if Dallas is able to keep its stars and key players healthy for the bulk of the season they have a great chance of winning the Super Bowl.
An “Easy” Schedule
8 of 10
Dallas has a very favorable schedule next season as they face teams like the Seahawks and Lions. Understand, both of the squads are decent opponents but Dallas has to like them over Green Bay and New Orleans.
If the Cowboys win the games they are supposed to the playoffs will come knocking on their door. But if they falter and lose games they shouldn’t then so long Indy.
Cohesive Locker Room
9 of 10
This really shouldn’t be a break, should it? Over the years Dallas hasn’t had the strongest locker room in the league whether its rumors about T.O. or that Romo isn’t a vocal leader.
Last season when the Packers won the Super Bowl, Aaron Rodgers said that the locker room came together and he felt that the team had something special.
If that happens for Dallas next season the maybe the postseason magic returns to Valley Ranch.
Rob Ryan’s Defensive Works
10 of 10
The Cowboys sucked at times on defense last season and they seemed to come around toward the end of last season.
But with Bum’s son on the outs in Cowboytown Jerry decided to bring in another big defensive name to replace him: Rob Ryan.
Dallas will be aggressive on defense next season and we’ll soon find out if they have the correct players to fit in Ryan’s exotic scheme.
