Turkish GP: Mercedes' Michael Schumacher Too Old For F1?

Yoosof FarahMay 8, 2011

Watching Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher at the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday, one thing seems very clear: The seven-time world champion is too old for Formula One.

In yet another poor race for the ex-Ferrari legend, Schumi finished 12th despite qualifying in eighth place. He was outdone by young teammate and fellow German Nico Rosberg, as well as the likes of Sebastien Buemi in the Toro Rosso, both Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld in the Renaults and even Kamui Kobayashi in the Sauber, who started the race from last on the grid after technical difficulties pre-qualifying.

It seems the main problem for poor Schumacher is that he still thinks he's the boss. His aggressive, arrogant driving style caused him many problems in Istanbul, especially when he collided with Petrov instead of letting him have the place in Turn 12 on the second lap.

A pit stop and new front wing later, Schumi was well down the pack, with no chance of catching his high-flying teammate Rosberg.

And as the race went on, things got worse for the German as his determined and somewhat arrogant approach to overtaking Ferrari's Felipe Massa ended up going horribly wrong, with the Mercedes man frequently going well over the apex, picking up the marbles and ultimately losing out to both ex-teammate Massa and young Buemi.

It's clear Michael Schumacher, in his second season back in F1 after a three-year hiatus, is still struggling to come to grips with the sport today.

Finishing seven places below his much younger teammate, perhaps Schumi is getting too old for Formula One.

Towards the end of races, his fitness seems to have declined, with the once energetic world champion fighting every opponent until the very end, now seemingly giving up if it doesn't go his way towards the last five or 10 laps.

While his arrogant approach to defend his position and the racing line, as well as when it comes to overtaking, smacks of a man who still thinks he's the boss on the grid.

But unfortunately for Michael Schumacher, it just isn't like that anymore. Formula One and its drivers have moved on, but Schumi is still yet to do so.
