IndyCar: Carnage Rains on Race in Sao Paulo

Sandra MacWattersMay 1, 2011

It was the perfect set up for a racing debacle, as the IndyCars lined up for their double file start on the winding track with the sheets of rain making the track one big wet slippery slide.

The green flag dropped for the Itaipava Sao Paulo 300 and within seconds, havoc broke out with cars crashing and spinning.

Helio Castroneves made contact with another car believed to be Dario Franchitti. Simona de Silvestro's car was on top of Danica Patrick's GoDaddy.com car, which had run over Tony Kanaan causing injury to his hand.

Both of the Brazilian fan favorites Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan were out of the race, but Kanaan thought if they could fix his car, he would be able to race it.

The cars started on the Firestone Firehawk rain tires, but the aqua-planing and poor visibility were no match for the open-wheel cars as they came up to speed.

Ryan Hunter-Reay started his No. 28 from the first row, but didn't make the first left turn and plowed into the tire barrier.

Danica Patrick just walked away from her damaged car shaking her head. It has been 51 races since Patrick won the race in Montegi.

In Sao Paulo, she will probably get her first DNF this year.

The race should have probably been stopped, but they made one more attempt on lap nine. It was no surprise to see Scott Dixon spin and others follow in yet another round of spinning and wrecking cars.

Alas, the officials red-flagged the race and made it a two hour timed event. The race on the 2.536 mile circuit is scheduled to resume with the rain letting up. Crews were trying to sweep the ponds of water off the 11 turn circuit.

Thankfully, no one was hurt seriously as this race began under conditions that were perhaps a bit too treacherous. The wheel of de Silvestro's car was precariously close to Patrick's head as it sat perched above her.

It was an useless and predictable loss of equipment that proved extremely expensive as the crews struggled to rebuild the ones they could get back on the track.

Will Power started on the pole and will remain the race leader when the race resumes.

Update: The race has been postponed until tomorrow (Monday) and will air on Versus at 8:00 a.m. ET weather permitting.
