UFC 129: Where Does Mark Hominick's Post-Fight Face Rank in UFC's Most Gruesome?
In his spirited featherweight battle versus champion Jose Aldo, number one contender Mark Hominick fought through cuts, bruises and a massive hematoma on his forehead to make it the distance.
Whenever you get a fighter as determined to win as Hominick, prepare to witness a rare display of heart and desire that only few fighters possess.
It's hard to image many fighters going through a five round battle with one of the most dangerous strikers in the world, but Hominick did it and even managed to have a late fight rally. It wasn't enough for the Canadian to take home the title, but he took home a lot of new fans. That's for sure.
This is a look back at some of the most gruesome post-fight faces in the UFC.
No. 5 Brandon Wolff (vs. Ben Saunders at UFC Fight for the Troops 1)
1 of 5
Ben Saunders is known for his relentless attack from the clinch, and he proved this to fans and more importantly, Brendan Wolff, at UFC Fight For the Troops 1. Wolff's face after the fight told the story of the bout.
Saunders' knees are some of the most vicious, and the lucky ones will get knocked out early. Wolff only lasted over a minute and a half, and his face had already swollen beyond belief before Saunders got the TKO stoppage.
No. 4 John Howard (vs. Jake Ellenberger at UFC Live)
2 of 5
John Howard was one of the fastest rising prospects in the welterweight division until he met hard-punching Jake Ellenberger at UFC Live last August.
The muay thai expert had taken a series of head shots that made his face swell up between the second and third rounds. Right hands continued to land before the referee called the doctor in to see the fighter.
To Howard's dismay, the doctor called off the bout, giving Ellenberger the win and leaving Howard with a massive swollen eye to take care of.
No. 3 Marcus Davis (vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 118)
3 of 5
Welterweight and lightweight fighter Marcus Davis has always had paper-thin skin from years of boxing, but Nate Diaz took more advantage of it than anybody before.
Diaz used his volume punching and looping shots to stun the 37-year-old in the first and second rounds. Davis' face began to swell and bleed early, and it was only getting worse for him as the fight went on. More cuts opened up, and his right eye began to swell massively.
From the back of Davis, you could see how big the bruise had gotten as you saw it peeking out the side. It didn't take very long after Diaz got Davis to the ground, and he followed up by slapping on a choke to put him to sleep.
No. 2 Mark Hominick (vs. Jose Aldo at UFC 129)
4 of 5
Mark Hominick's hematoma was extremely brutal looking and slightly reminiscent of Hasim Rahman's versus Evander Holyfield in boxing.
Even with blood pouring out of the cuts beneath his eyes, the 28-year-old battled one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world for five-rounds, losing a unanimous decision in the end.
The cuts were not anywhere near as gruesome as the hematoma, but all of it together made one nasty looking post-fight image of a true warrior.
No. 1 Diego Sanchez (vs. Martin Kampmann at UFC on Versus)
5 of 5
Nothing was ever as harrowing looking as Diego Sanchez's face after his bout versus Martin Kampmann. It was so horrific, it was actually terrifying.
With blood streaming down his face from every opening, it looked like something out of a horror movie.
Kampmann had out-boxed the Ultimate Fighter winner for the better part of two rounds before Sanchez came back to rally in the final round with his face looking like a mess.
Sanchez won a controversial split-decision in the end, but his face told the real story of the fight.
