UFC: Jon Fitch Out for 6 Months with Shoulder Surgery
It looks like it's going from bad to worse for American Kickboxing Academy.
The latest news to come out of the camp is regarding Jon Fitch, who suffered a shoulder injury during his bout with BJ Penn at UFC 125, and will now have to have surgery and rehabilitate for the next six months.
The news broke out when Fitch spoke to MMAJunkie.com after he learned about going under the knife.
"I'm going to have to get the labrum worked on, and I also have a tear on the rotator cuff muscles that's going to need to be repaired, too," Fitch said regarding the injury.
AKA already have one their premier fighters on the sidelines, UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez. Velasquez, like Fitch, also tore his rotator cuff while competing in his title bout versus Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. Velasquez is currently expected to be out from six to eight months.
As a result, his rematch against BJ Penn has now been scrapped.
Fitch and Penn, who fought to a controversial draw, were scheduled for UFC 132 this summer. When Fitch does return to active competition, he says he expects to have a rematch with Penn.
"It's the best fight for each of us," Fitch said.
"I think it would be dumb for either of us to take a fight with anybody else but each other before we settle it."
Meanwhile, Fitch intends to hang around the gym and contribute to his camp, but it is expected he won't be able to fight for most of the year.
"It's depressing," he said.
"My most favourite thing to do in the world every day with my life, I don't get to do now for a few months."
