NFL Draft 2011: Will the Washington Redskins Miss Out on Julio Jones Sweepstakes?

James BrownApr 16, 2011

Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones is a first-round talent and is coveted by a handful of NFL teams.

Many of the mock drafts have the Washington Redskins selecting Jones with the No. 10 pick, but Jones may not be around.

Jones' draft stock is going through the roof and teams are scurrying to take a shot at the receiver and steal the pick from the Redskins.

If Jones is gone, it is not the end of the world for the Redskins as they have plenty of other options and there is speculation that they may not even take him if he is available.

The Redskins could easily trade the pick and the fact that teams are scurrying for Jones could actually play in their favor.

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland is in the driver’s seat in the Jones sweepstakes. Assuming the Bengals select Blaine Gabbert or A.J. Green, the Browns will have the rights to Julio Jones.

The Browns phone will be ringing off the hook, as they could get offers from plenty of teams trying to move up to this spot.

For a young and rebuilding franchise, Jones is a safe bet for the Browns. If they keep him he will fit into a young offense that is getting better every year; if they trade the pick they will get plenty to build with in return.

The Titans did not seem as though they were in the race for a wide receiver, but that all changed when Kenny Britt got into some trouble with the law.

Now with Britt’s future and character in doubt, Jones would be the answer for a team that needs some good news. The Titans may still draft a quarterback or defensive tackle, but the option to get a wide receiver is a possibility.

Don’t count out the Patriots trading up to get Julio Jones.

Bill Belichick has a great relationship with Alabama coach Nick Saban and can get the inside information on Jones.

They have the draft picks to pique the interest of Cleveland or Dallas to move up in the draft and will be a major player in this sweepstakes.

While the Patriots are known for trading down and stock piling picks, this could be the year when they shake it up to get a player that can stretch the field.

Julio Jones visited the Rams on Thursday and they were impressed.

They were so impressed that the latest rumors suggest that they would trade up to get the talented wide receiver.

The Rams would have to jump ahead of the Washington Redskins and hope that Jones is still around. While Jones would be a great addition  to this team, they would be making a mistake to trade up for Jones.

They would have to give up too much to get Jones, and right now the Rams are still in need of more players to strengthen a questionable roster.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys don’t want Jones, but they are a outlet in the quest for Jones.

The Rams would love to trade up ahead of Washington to get Jones and the Cowboys could be the team to help out. The Cowboys have stated that several teams have called about the No. 9 pick and so the Cowboys are sitting pretty in the Jones sweepstakes.

The race for Julio Jones will be fun to watch, but it is still unclear what uniform he will be wearing on draft day.
