UFC 129 Preview: Georges St-Pierre Talks Jake Shields, Anderson Silva

Mike HodgesApr 14, 2011

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is a man of few words, who prefers to do his talking inside the Octagon.

However, he does what he can to promote an event and he does it to the best of his ability.

St-Pierre promoted his upcoming title bout at UFC 129 while appearing on the MMA Fight Corner radio show, courtesy of FiveKnuckles.com.

St-Pierre spoke on his opponent, Jake Shields, and was clearly aware of the qualities that the former Strikeforce middleweight champion brings to the table.

"Jake Shields is a much different opponent than all the guys I have fought recently," St-Pierre admitted.

"He actually has the skills to beat me, to put me in danger and really beat me. He doesn't count on a one-punch K.O. So for me it's a great fight. He's the most dangerous guy that I've fought in my career and I really welcome the challenge."

Shields is currently riding a 15-fight winning streak and St-Pierre acknowledged that his opponent hasn't lost in five years.

It is with such admiration that St-Pierre believes Shields is his successor in the welterweight division, should he move up to 185 pounds and vacate the title.

Speaking of the middleweight division, St-Pierre remained open to the idea, but at the moment, he is solely focused on his fight against Shields.

"We don't know because I have another fight," St-Pierre said.

"And for me it would be foolish to look past Jake Shields. I don't want to do that. I'll have to sit down with my trainer and with the UFC as well, which I haven't done yet, and we're going to have to look at the whole picture. Right now, I haven't considered what I'm going to do but fight Shields."

While he might appear hesitant or disinterested in a potential "superfight" with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, St-Pierre does not fear the challenge. Confident in his abilities, St-Pierre says nobody is invincible in mixed martial arts, including Silva.

"I can beat Anderson Silva. Every guy can beat every guy, it's just the way you fight them," St-Pierre explained.

"Most of the good guys have lost before. They lost because they made a mistake and it happens to everyone. No one is invincible."
