Injury Forces Jon Fitch Out of UFC 132 Bout With B.J. Penn
An injury during training has forced perennial contender Jon Fitch to withdraw from his scheduled rematch with two-division champion B.J. Penn at UFC 132.
Fitch's removal from the card was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday by sources close to the situation.
The fight was set as an immediate rematch to Fitch and Penn's UFC 127 bout, which ended in a majority draw. Two of the judges gave Penn the first two rounds, but in the third, Fitch was awarded a 10-8 round. The official scorecards read 28-29, 28-28, and 28-28.
At the moment, there isn't any news regarding the severity of the injury, but it was significant enough for Fitch to withdraw from the July 2 fight card. A search for a replacement fighter to step in against Penn is currently underway.
Coming off his devastating KO win over Dan Hardy, Carlos Condit has already expressed his interest in a bout with Penn on his Twitter account.
"It would be an honor to fight a legend like BJ Penn," Condit posted. "[He's] one of my favorite fighters ever. If the call comes, I would take the fight in a second."
Condit was scheduled to fight Chris Lytle at UFC 127, but he was forced off the card with a knee injury. A UFC 132 return makes sense for the former WEC Welterweight Champion. Let the speculation begin.
