Silva vs. St-Pierre: A Reason the UFC Doesn't Want to Make This Fight Happen

Cody GuinnMar 28, 2011

The UFC has been going back and forth with the idea of a Superfight between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and UFC Welterweight Champion George St-Pierre lately. To many fans, it upsets; to me, it makes a ton of sense. Fans believe that the UFC is scared of what would happen if one of their major marquee names, but that's not it all.

The UFC's weakest division is the Welterweight. So let's that imagine St-Pierre defeats Jake Shields in Toronto and the UFC comes around and makes the superfight; now look at the top five fighters in the welterweight division: tell me which one could be the main man to represent the division.Jon Fitch: a great fighter and from a fighter standpoint, one of the best in the world, but from a fan standpoint? Maybe the most boring fighter in the UFC. He's a grappler and uses his strength to overpower his opponents and grind out victories. Nobody wants to pay to watch him fight five rounds every title defense.

Same exact thing with Jake Shields. This is probably the only time the UFC is hoping Shields turns a new leaf and some how discovers a way to defeat St-Pierre. Because the UFC could hype a return match with GSP and make the GSP-Shields rivalry a major event in the UFC; even though many would say Shields is also a total bore to watch. Josh Koscheck and Thiago Alves are two more welterweights that would be in the running if St-Pierre jumped divisions. Both are exciting strikers and also exciting trash talkers which is appealing to fans, but both have showed inconsistencies in MMA and in my opinion, I can't see either man being a champion for very long.

B.J. Penn has showed that he can be a face of a division, but I see Penn coming to the end of his greatness “Prodigy" days. There is hope though and all hope would be in one man: Nick Diaz. With Zuffa purchasing Strikeforce, everyone continues to talk the fighters coming over and no matter what Dana says, it will happen eventually. And it will happen much sooner than later if St-Pierre was to jump up to Middleweight, because Nick could save the welterweight division. He's a talented all around fighter with that fun-to-watch style, the cocky attitude, and, well, if you've watched or listened to Nick, you know he's not afraid to speak his mind. He's a fan favorite and also, easy to hate; a win-win to the UFC.

Obviously, there are so many ifs that anything can happen, but this should clear up some of the reason the UFC is currently against the Superfight between Silva and St-Pierre, although, it would be a treat to see two of the best all-time fight. But for the sake of the Welterweight division, it might be best if the fight doesn't happen at all.
