UFC Fight Night 24 Results: The Real Winners and Losers from Seattle

Dale De SouzaJun 7, 2018

UFC Fight Night 24 ended on a pretty good note last night, but as always, we had to see some guys prevail and other guys fail.

Phil Davis edged Rogerio Nogueira, Anthony Johnson earned a nod over Dan Hardy, Amir Sadollah beat Damarques Johnson and, in one of Saturday's two candidates for Submission of the Year, Chan Sung Jung and his YouTube-perusing prowess utilized Eddie Bravo's "Twister" neck crank to put The Korean Zombie at 1-1-0 against The Texas Zombie, Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia.

At the end of the evening, though, who were the ones that really came out on top, and which of these personalities were the ones that really flopped?

That's where I come in: to let you in on who the real winners and losers were coming out of the Fight Night card last night.

Winner: Everyone Who Saw McDonald vs. Figueroa

1 of 9

If you haven't seen Michael McDonald's fight with Edwin Figueroa, Zuffa hasn't taken it down yet, so it's still a fight that many (myself included) would highly recommend checking out.

Now, if you watch the fight, it's obvious how the judges saw the fight in favor of McDonald, but with the resilience that Figueroa showed in this fight, it's hard to say that the fans who stayed with this fight from beginning to end didn't win in this one.

In fact, they were entertained all throughout that 15-minute affair, even when the fight hit the ground, and they were left satisfied after it was announced that McDonald has won with the same 30-27 score on all three scorecards.

Loser: Sean McCorkle

2 of 9

"Big Sexy" Sean McCorkle was looking to bounce back from his first career loss, which came at the hands of Stefan Struve at UFC 124 in December, and he looked primed to do just that in Seattle.

The only problem was that Christian Morecraft was primed to do the exact same thing in the exact same town, and he was primed to avenge his UFC 117 loss last August at the expense of McCorkle.

McCorkle didn't tap, but he did go out thanks to a guillotine choke from Morecraft.

Now, the next fight of McCorkle's UFC career may have to result in a victory just for the former Internet-warrior can keep his occupation as a professional UFC fighter.

Winner: Eddie Bravo

3 of 9

Never before had anyone been able to expertly utilize one of Bravo's unorthodox submissions the way Jung used The Twister last night against Garcia, but that was, of course, before Jung got the second round of the rematch to the ground.

Once the fight hit the ground, Jung worked to get the back of Garcia, hitting Garcia with a few shots to the face before moving the arm back and cranking the neck to earn the tap.

Loser: Leonard Garcia

4 of 9

Granted, Leonard looked to set himself up more for a KO by flying knee than he seemed to set himself up for a submission loss, and the submission was one that no one saw coming.

That, plus Garcia did do a good job of not fighting recklessly and looking clean with his striking despite losing the first round, but in the end, the score was tied 1-1-0 thanks to the Eddie Bravo-inspired submission.

Winner: Amir Sadollah

5 of 9

While Damarques Johnson appeared to be a winner early on in the bout, Amir Sadollah came back strong late in the first round and took the fight by use of his elbows and his knees in the second round.

The time might be soon to start giving Amir some higher-ranked competition with the win over Johnson—sooner or later, the thought of him facing okay-at-best welterweights on Fight Night cards and un-aired preliminary cards will sound ridiculous to even Amir's most hardcore doubters.

There comes a time when you have to give a deserving fighter his crack at the big time, and that time is coming soon for Sadollah.

Loser: Damarques Johnson

6 of 9

Johnson was supposed to be the guy who proved what happens when certain guys (Amir Sadollah) take fights against opponents that they haven't had adequate time to prepare for.

Instead, he went from a man with a dominant first round to the example of what happens when you peak early and drain your energy tank out in almost the first 10 minutes of the fight.

Give Johnson an "A" for effort and a "C" for "check your cardio at the cage door next fight, Damarques."

Winner: Anthony Johnson

7 of 9

Explosive he was not, but Johnson was every bit of smart in his fight against Dan Hardy.

The Outlaw, like many, expected that this fight would stay standing all throughout, but the dominant wrestling of Johnson prevailed over the still-improving former UFC welterweight title contender.

After the win, Johnson was rumored to have called out one John Howard—perhaps an omen of what could come in the next fight for Rumble.

Winner: Phil Davis

8 of 9

Whether he won 29-28 or 30-27 on your scorecard, the fact remains that Phil Davis did enough to beat Rogerio Nogueira despite getting tagged on the inside by the PRIDE legend.

Once Nogueira got caught with a single-leg takedown and ate some heavy shots on the bottom, not even Nogueira's ability to fight off of his back would be enough to take either the second or third round.

Many people are likely to call Davis' performance "lackluster," but maybe that was due to people's high expectations of Davis in this fight, given how Jon Jones did last weekend.

Davis is a breed of freak athlete that's all his own, and most people would do well to remember that instead of comparing him to the current 205-pound champ.

Loser: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

9 of 9

Poor Little Nog.

One minute he's prepping for a ruthless ground-and-pounder in Tito Ortiz, and the next, he's going up against a freak athlete with solid wrestling and scary jiu jitsu (for a purple belt) in Phil Davis.

Couple that with the fact that he was arguably in the driver's seat for Round 1 (due to some badass takedown defense and solid Boxing) and had no answer for the single-leg in Rounds 2 and 3, and from there, we can say that Davis was responsible for the bad night Nogueira had in Seattle.

Nogueira can say he did some damage to Davis and exposed a "wonderful" flaw in Davis' reaction to getting hit on the inside, but while Nogueira turned in a rather strong performance of his own against the young prospect, his fight with Davis spoke more volumes towards the resilience of the still-undefeated wrestler out of the Lloyd Irvin/Alliance MMA camp.
