The Top Five Heels in the UFC Today

DanielJun 7, 2018

Unlike in pro wresting, heels in MMA aren't acting that way and haven't been ordered to try and gain a 'heel' reaction.

However, it is very clear that fans are willing to root for one fighter more than another and a lot of that comes down to their distinct dislike of a certain fighter.

From loud boos to abuse on the internet, these fighters have seen it all. They are not less talented that other fighters, but they decided to create a certain persona to gain more views, money and interest.

5: Frank Mir

Frank Mir has been in some hugely personal fights in his time. Mainly with Brock Lesnar. There is no hiding the fact that Lesnar and Mir are far from fans of each other and, despite Mir being a clear fan favorite in these bouts, it hasn't really done anything for his reputation.

If you listened to Mir commentate on WEC you would soon realise that Mir is a very articulate and well-educated man which what makes his comments about Lesnar so astonishing

In a radio interview with Mark Madden of WXDX radio Mir said, "I want to fight Lesnar. I hate who he is as a person. I want to break his neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies due to Octagon-related injuries. That's what's going through my mind."

The comments above are so unacceptable its scary. Mir did make an official apology, however the damage was already done.

My main issue with these remarks is that we are currently in an age where we are trying to educate the rest of the world about what such a great sport we have. However, many stereotypes are often flown about such as "human cock fighting". Obviously this is nonsense, but when you get a big MMA fighter like Mir talking about killing a person in the octagon, it doesn't do anything for the sport but damage it.

For that reason Mir will always be a heel in my eyes. Not only that, but the way he comes across in interviews, such as stating that Cheik Kongo has "the worst ground game in the heavyweight division". It may be true, but you don't really need to insult someone on that level.

Mir has has some major controversy in the past and isn't shy on the insults either. He's a great heel.

4: Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz is a professional heel. No doubt about it. He created his own heel like persona to gauge more interest in himself and his fights.

Ortiz has a resume of heel. Antics from digging Evan Tanner a grave celebration after slamming him unconscious to arrogant trash talk to numerous feuds with Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock.

Although you do have to give some credit to Tito. Ortiz was the first to brand himself a 'bad boy of MMA' and he drew an audience of over a one million for his fight with Chuck Liddell.

Then you also have the fight with Dana White, which never came to fruition.

Tito is falling off the heel ladder at the moment as his career dwindles down, but you never forget the original 'MMA bad boy'.

3: Michael Bisping

The trash-talking Brit took his level of hate to another level at UFC 127 and his post-fight antics lead him to not receiving his bonus from the UFC.

Bisping annoyed a whole nation of people on The Ultimate Fighter. When Dan Henderson knocked him out at UFC 100, many were overjoyed.

Bisping's home country is even seeing a shift in fan favor, as many are becoming sick of Bisping's antics and are getting quite annoyed with Bisping. Despite this, he still remains popular in his own country.

At UFC 127, a lot was said in pre-fight but Bisping's antics post fight were unacceptable as he decided to spit in Matt Finney's face. Many people also believe that when Bisping hit Rivera with an illegal knee it was actually intentional and it seriously effected the out come of the fight. Dana White is one of them.

The Brit is cocky, brash and broad and he doesn't care if you hate him. This make him the ultimate heel.

Ever since making the switch to MMA, Brock Lesnar has been truly hated and has loved his role of heel of the heavyweight division.

The former UFC heavyweight champion has been famous for his post fight antics with fighters such as Frank Mir and Heath Herring. Many also believe that Lesnar got an undeserved title shot which infuriated fans.

For a champion, Lesnar also fails to show much personality being a very closed off person. Often described as a person who 'dislikes people' it annoys the hell out of people when they can't be involved in a champions life.

Many old school MMA fans are also opposed to fighters from WWE and other wresting organisations joining the UFC and MMA. They were just about at boiling point when Lesnar started putting a winning streak together and successfully defended his title and showed heart against Shane Carwin.

Lesnar was then defeated by Cain Velasquez and did finally show some humility in the post-fight interviews.

Despite this Lesnar still has huge haters and is fully happy with his heel role.

1: Josh Koscheck

If you want to find out about a guy who loves the hate he gets and playing the heel role look no further than Josh Koscheck.

A great example of Koscheck's antics all occur in one fight against Anthony Johnson in November 2009. In the first round Koscheck claimed he was hit in the face with an illegal knee.

The knee made no impact. In the post-fight interviews Koscheck  decided it wasn't a knee he was reacting to but a poke in the eye from Johnson. Once again the replays showed that if anyone made contact with Koscheck's eye it was himself or no one.

The second round lifted Koscheck's heel status even further as he poked Johnson in the eye twice before slipping in a rear naked choke to win the fight.

Koscheck doesn't stop there. During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan in Montreal at UFC 113, he says the "Pittsburgh Penguins would beat the Montreal Canadiens" in the playoff series they were taking part in. Safe to say it did go down well with a bunch of die-hard Canadiens fans.

You also had Koscheck on The Ultimate Fighter with his "male nurse" gag which he used to get inside GSP's team. It worked. That's why he is the best heel in the business.
