UFC: 5 Fights We'd Love to See for Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones
Jon Jones wowed the crowd last Saturday, taking out light heavyweight champion, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua for the title.
Now the MMA world has let his hype get out of hand. Now the million dollar question has become, who can beat the unstoppable, athletic Jones?
Here are five fights Jon Jones should take to defend his title.
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
1 of 5
Record: 31-8
Reach: 73 inches
Height: 6 foot 1 inch
Okay, so here would be a pretty solid match-up for Jon Jones. Rampage's reach will be a huge difference maker here, but he has the takedown defense to stop Jones.
Rampage has beaten a lot of good names and stopped plenty of hype trains, too. Rampage would have the strength to send Jones to the mat for an instant knockout. That is, if his speed can keep up with Jones.
Out of all the fighters in the light heavyweight division, Rampage has the best shot, and that's saying something, considering I don't give him much of a shot to beat the future of MMA, Jones.
Chance of beating Jones: 35 percent
Lyoto Machida
2 of 5
Record: 16-2
Reach: 74 inches
Height: 6 foot 1 inch
All right, so this all depends on Machida getting past Randy Couture at UFC 129 at the end of April. Machida was the first in this succession of light heavyweight "eras."
First ,it was the "Machida Era", then it was the "Shogun Era" and now it's the "Jones Era." After watching Jones Saturday, I think he will hold it for a long time coming. Machida could stop it, though.
Machida is known for his elusiveness. All right, so it hasn't worked that well as of late, but he could get it back against Couture. Machida is still a great fighter and can still strike with the best of them with his unorthodox Machida karate.
Machida is the first person since Rampage to defend his light heavyweight title; everyone else has failed to defend it even once. I think that speaks for itself on his skill level.
Plus, his last two losses (and only two losses) have came against Rampage (Split decision) and Shogun (TKO). Those are not a horrible two losses.
Chance of beating Jones: 20 percent
Rashad Evans
3 of 5
Record: 13-1-1
Reach: 74.5 inches
Height: 5 foot 11 inches
All right, so this is Jones next opponent, anyway. But here is an early breakdown of what could happen. Evans has an advantage over every other light heavyweight fighter in the UFC.
Evans has trained with Jones and knows his strengths (like everyone else at this point) and weaknesses (unlike everyone else at this point).
Evans has a chip on his shoulder now, after leaving Greg Jackson's camp and referring to Jones as "Judas".
Evans has some good wrestling and striking. If anyone will neutralize Jones it could be him. I'm not saying he will beat Jones (not by a long shot), but Evans does pose a threat for Jones.
Plus if you look at the reaches, Evans' is 10 inches shy of Jones' reach (Jones has a 84.5-inch reach).
Chance of beating Jones: 30 percent
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
4 of 5
Record: 19-5
Reach: 76 inches
Height: 6 foot 1 inch
So you might be saying to yourself "Shogun just got beat bad by Jones, why would he be a good opponent?" Well, Shogun never fights well after a layoff from his surgery.
Shogun is a deadly striker, and next time around, if he doesn't have ring rust, he could beat Jones. Not saying it's a good chance that it won't end the same way, but it could be different.
Shogun would learn the error of his ways from their first go around and will come in with a completely different style.
If he wasn't coming off of surgery and a huge layoff, I feel the fight with Jones would be different. But he was and it led to a huge beatdown. It was almost inhumane.
Chance of beating Jones: 15 percent
Anderson Silva
5 of 5
Record: 28-4-0
Reach: 77.6 inches
Height: 6 foot 2 inches
Current UFC Middleweight Champion
On a list that includes all former light heavyweight champions, how about I give you one who is the current middleweight champion? Silva is the size of a normal light heavyweight. Reach-wise, height-wise and even weight-wise (Silva walks around at like 220 pounds) Silva is a light heavyweight.
This is a dream fight everyone has been clamoring for and is the best shot at de-throning Jones. He doesn't have the ideal reach, but honestly unless Stretch Armstrong gets out there and somehow gains anthropomorphic qualities, there is no way you'll get past that.
Silva has what it takes to beat Jones in his deadly accurate striking. He's like the sniper of MMA, everything he throws lands with precision. Not only that he fights that unorthodox, crazy style Jones fights. I mean Silva knocked a guy out from his back and was disqualified.
Probably because it was too awesome to win like that. His only problem is the wrestling of Jones. Silva has been proven weak by wrestlers in the UFC.
Look at the Sonnen fight and it could go the same way, minus the mistake at the end where Sonnen got caught and lost.
Chance at beating Jones: 50% (Fight could really go either way)
