UFC 128 Results: What Does the Future Hold for Nate Marquardt?
Last night was a good showing for Nate Marquardt. It was good, but not his best performance against a guy who was supposed to fight on the undercard, Dan Miller.
But all in all Marquardt had no preparation for Miller. So for taking a fight on such short notice (Yoshihiro Akiyama pulled out of the fight to be with family in Japan), Marquardt did well.
But there is always chatter after a fighter says something in a post-fight interview. Whether it's a serious thought or just a thought that was tossed out there will be answered soon.
Marquardt has considered the idea of moving down from 185 pounds to 170 pounds to fight at the welterweight division.
"We talked about me cutting down to 170," Marquardt said to Ariel Helwani post-fight. "I was walking around really light, basically at the same weight that Georges walks around at. I think it's something that I'd like to try out and if it's a good fit, go for the title there."
Marquardt should stay at middleweight though. He has a lot to accomplish at that level and is still a perennial title contender in the division.
Plus he still has one thing left to do - shut up Michael Bisping.
"I would just love to fight that guy. Just to punch him in his mouth, shut him up. That'd be nice," Marquardt said after open workouts.
Not only that, Marquardt has said Bisping is a "total punk, no respect."
Marquardt is still a great middleweight fighter and could challenge for a title. But as long as Anderson Silva is champion, Marquardt won't hold gold.
Even if he were to move down to welterweight he would have to face the likes of Georges St-Pierre.
Marquardt has already fought Silva for the title once and has fought in three title eliminator fights. He can surely get there one more time.
For now, a date with Bisping seems like the best thing for Marquardt.
