UFC 128 Results: Jon Jones and the Top 10 Light Heavyweights in the UFC
Last night was one of the best cards of the year.
Brendan Schaub showed that he is going to be a player in the heavyweight division.
Jim Miller made another statement for a title shot.
Urijah Faber set up a rematch with Dominick Cruz.
Jon Jones won the UFC Light Heavyweight title from Mauricio Rua.
So with a title change, there will be a change in the rankings. Here's the top 10 light heavyweights in the UFC today.
10. Ryan Bader
1 of 10
Ryan Bader (12-1) is the season eight winner of The Ultimate Fighter.
Before his fight against Jon Jones at UFC 126, he had been undefeated, with wins over Keith Jardine and Rogerio Nogueria.
Bader has been chomping at the bit to get back into the cage. Maybe if Phil Davis is victorious next week that could set up a fight between them.
9. Thiago Silva
2 of 10
Thiago Silva (15-2) was last seen at UFC 125, where he embarrassed, drummed, and forcefully made his way to a unanimous-decision victory over Brandon Vera.
He was originally slated to fight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 130, but he was pulled from the fight due to the lack of information about his drug test.
While maybe his urine will come back dirty, he still sits at the No. 9 spot.
8. Matt Hamill
3 of 10
Matt Hamill (10-2) is currently on a five-fight win streak.
In Hamill's last fight at UFC 121, he won a unanimous decision over his former TUF coach, Tito Ortiz.
After a big jumble up in the light heavyweight division, Hamill will be fighting Rampage Jackson at UFC 130.
7. Randy Couture
4 of 10
Randy Couture (19-10) is a former two-time UFC Light Heavyweight champion and a former three-time UFC Heavyweight champion.
Couture is currently on a three-fight win streak, although not all of them have been against the most dangerous opponents.
Brandon Vera was a viable opponent when the fight happened.
Mark Coleman was released after his loss to Couture.
And the fight over Toney shouldn't count for anything.
When Couture was considering retirement, he said that he wanted a fight against Lyoto Machida, or a non-title fight against Shogun.
Well he got his wish, and he will be fighting Machida at UFC 129.
6. Lyoto Machida
5 of 10
Lyoto Machida (16-2) is a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion who is currently on a two-fight losing streak.
Almost anyone on a two-fight losing streak has no place on a top 10 list, but Machida's two losses have been to top-tier competition.
Machida is set up to fight Couture at UFC 129.
5. Forrest Griffin
6 of 10
Forrest Griffin (18-6) is the season one winner of The Ultimate Fighter, and a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion.
In Griffin's last fight at UFC 126, he won a unanimous decision over Rich Franklin, in which he used his size to control Franklin for most of the fight.
Griffin may have injured his foot in the fight, and he could be out until August, but once he gets back he's going to want a big fight if he hopes to get a title shot again.
4. Mauricio Rua
7 of 10
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (19-5) is a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion.
On Saturday night, Shogun was TKO'd by Jon Jones on his way to losing the belt.
Shogun will have to start his ascent back up the ladder if he wants his belt back.
Another option I heard mentioned (by Joe Rogan, I believe) was Shogun dropping to 185. We'll have to see what happens with that.
3. Rampage Jackson
8 of 10
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (31-8), is a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, and he sits at the No. 3 spot on the list.
Rampage is coming off a controversial split-decision win over Lyoto Machida at UFC 123.
Rampage's next fight was originally going to be against Thiago Silva, then Rashad Evans, but once the dust settled, it was decided that Rampage would fight Matt Hamill at UFC 130.
If Rampage wins, look for him to keep the number-3 spot.
2. Rashad Evans
9 of 10
Rashad Evans (15-1-1) is a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, the current No. 1 contender to Jon Jones' belt, and winner of season two of The Ultimate Fighter.
Evans was originally set to fight Shogun for the title at UFC 128, but a knee injury forced him out, and allowed his teammate, Jon Jones, to step in and fight for the title.
We all know that Jones won, and Rashad has now left Greg Jackson's camp, and Jones and Rashad will put aside their friendship and fight.
As Joe Rogan pointed out, if anyone knows Jon Jones' weaknesses, it's Evans.
1. Jon Jones
10 of 10
Jon Jones (13-1) is the current UFC Light Heavyweight champion, and the number-one light heavyweight in the world.
Jones has torn through the UFC, and at the age of 23, with only three years of MMA training, he is the world champion, and the youngest UFC champion in history.
Jones next fight will be against Rashad Evans, possibly at UFC 132 or 133.
