UFC 128 Results: Jon Jones Dominates and Destroys Shogun Rua
Whoever said patience is a virtue, certainly didn't mention it to Jon "Bones" Jones.
The UFC light heavyweight division was shaken up once again, as Jones, at just 23 years old, became the youngest champion in UFC history following his dominating victory over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
Interestingly, as dominant and experienced Rua was, he was considered an underdog to the younger challenger.
Jones looked as impressive as ever as he outmatched the Brazilian with his size, reach and wrestling ability. From the opening bell, Jones quickly imposed his will and opened up with a flying knee on the champion. From there, Jones took control and dominated in every aspect of the fight.
As the fight concluded, Jones looked to finish the champion, but the resiliency of Rua showed, momentarily, before Jones continued to have his way with him. Shortly after Jones hurt Rua with a devastating knee to the body, and landed an uppercut to put the champion away in the third round.
This is Rua's fifth professional loss, putting him at an unimpressive 3-3 with UFC. Prior to the bout, Rua was returning after a 10 month absence following another knee surgery, which is something that is all too familiar with the Brazilian as he has gone under the knife three times in the past four years.
What's next for Jones?
Following an impressive victory over Rua, Jones captured the title and will look to begin his reign against fellow training partner, Rashad Evans. Both men are a little hesitant to fighting each other, but UFC president Dana White confirmed the bout will indeed commence.
While this might cause a rift between the two friends, it is only fair that they square off to determine the top fighter in the light heavyweight division.
What's next for Rua?
Not since his debut versus Forrest Girffin, has Rua looked so sluggish. The former Pride FC Grand Prix winner was dominated and never seemed to find his rhythm against Jones.
Rua will likely rest and heal before he is to see the Octagon later this year. A bout with Rich Franklin comes to mind, while a rematch against either Quinton "Rampage" Jackson or Forrest Griffin is also a possibility.
