UFC 128 Results: Jon Jones Silences Skeptics, Dominates Mauricio Rua
Well, folks. The questions have been answered.
Heading into UFC 128, many people were doubting Jon "Bones" Jones due to his lack of experience, myself included. He had some very solid wins to his name, but he had not faced any elite competition. Many people believed he didn't even deserve the title shot to begin with.
Jones was awarded the title shot after his victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 126. His teammate, Rashad Evans, was previously scheduled to face Shogun, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Jones was handed an opportunity and he made the absolute most of it.
At UFC 128, Jones defeated Mauricio "Shogun" Rua with a decisive third-round technical knockout.
Shogun came game to fight, but the reach and wrestling of Jones was too much for him to deal with. Throughout the fight, Jones was able to telegraph Shogun's strikes because Shogun had to lunge forward to get within range.
Shogun brought the fight to Jones more than anyone else so far (which isn't saying that much really), but was unable to stop Jones' takedowns and that was the story of the fight.
Jones did well on the feet, but when it came to the ground game, he dominated. Shogun had no answer to Jones' top game, other than to feebly attempt leg locks.
In the third round, Jones finally let loose with his ground and pound, first hitting Shogun with a giant left hand and then following up with a flurry. Shogun was clearly very badly hurt, but managed to get back to his feet. Jones charged forward, landed a punch and a knee, Shogun dropped and the ref stopped the fight.
So, that's all there is. Jones answered all the questions tonight and silenced all the skeptics. He is the UFC's new light heavyweight champion—and the youngest one in history to boot.
