UFC 128 Fight Card: Rashad Evans Speaks About Fighting Teammate Jon Jones
UFC 128 brings a huge problem to the table for MMA. If Jon Jones were to win, would he fight his teammate, Rashad Evans, for his newly gained title?
The answer became, yes.
"I respect Dana White a lot and if that's what he absolutely wanted to happen, then, you know, I guess that's what would have to happen," Jones said in an interview with Ariel Helwani.
"Me or Rashad would not want to get fired over the situation. It would just be majorly awkward for us. Rashad and I have a lot in common; we're both young, African-American men with families, we both like to sing and have fun, we're both elite MMA fighters, I mean, we have a lot in common. We really clicked really well and there is just so many other great fighters in the world that we could compete against. And we're not animals, we're friends and we're people; we're human beings. I just would hate to have to fight my own teammate. I would never want to," Jones continued.
Jones has recently become a little angry towards the numerous questions about a fight, purely based on speculation and the fact that Jones would win on Saturday, that would involve his teammate, Evans.
"The fact that people are bringing up Rashad, it almost angers me. Rashad has nothing to do with 'Shogun,' and I think from here on out I won't even answer a question about Rashad," said Jones according to MMAMania.
"It can go either way. But if it does happen that I get a title shot afterwards, then I have to think about whether I take it depending on who it is and decide on what I want to do," Evans said recently in an interview with ESPN's MMA Live.
Now Evans is changing his tune and bringing the heat, going back at his teammate.
"That does sound a little bit cold-blooded [on Jones' comments during the conference call]. Jon's a young guy and when you're a young guy sometimes you talk a little too fast for your brain to keep up ...I don't think it's acceptable at all. I don't think it's something I'd say," Evans said to Pro MMA Radio.
"It sounds like he wants to fight, huh? Those sound like fighting words. I don't know how to judge the kid. It's kind of messed up, to be honest. I can't control what anyone else says and it sounds to me like he's a little bit insecure about the whole thing. Sometimes when you open your mouth you show what you're afraid of more than anything. I don't know why he has such an adverse response like that to me. I've never challenged him or made him feel like he should do that sort of thing. It sounds to me -- if I was out of the situation -- that he was feeling insecure about me. ... [It makes Jon] sound like a baby," Evans continued in his interview.
Evans has previously said he would not fight Jones and move to middleweight if Jones were to win against Shogun.
""There is no doubt in my mind that [Jones] is going to win," Evans said to ESPN.com in February. "He is going to destroy Rua in the first round."
"[After that], I'm still not going to fight Jon. I will always find something to challenge myself. I will go up to heavyweight or down to middleweight. But I will not fight Jon," Evans continued.
