GSP vs. Anderson Silva: UFC President Dana White Talks About the Mega-Fight
Anderson Silva's manager has chimed in, Georges St-Pierre has chimed in and now Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has thrown his two cents into the ring about the mega-fight that fans everywhere want to see.
Of course though, this fight isn't set in stone and GSP still needs to take down Jake Shields at UFC 129 at the end of the April for the discussion between the two fighters to even begin.
But that hasn't stopped media outlets and people related to the fighters from making it known how they feel about the super-fight that would most likely declare one of the two fighters the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The fight could also cement one of them as the greatest fighter the UFC, and MMA, have ever seen.
"I don’t know if I’m gonna go up to 185. I have no idea," GSP said to the Versus crew at UFC on Versus 3. "It’s a complete reorientation of my career. I have a lot to lose."
That interview alone has made a lot of people believe that the UFC welterweight champion is afraid to fight Silva.
"Georges St-Pierre has never turned down a fight in all of the years I have known him and neither has Anderson Silva," said White in an interview with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting. "The one thing about this fight and I keep saying this, and people just don't seem to get it, it's fantasy. This fight is a fantasy fight."
White is even very skeptical of the prospect that GSP is scared to face the man who has fought at both middleweight and light heavyweight, Silva.
"Do I think that if all the stars line up and everything works out perfect and everything is right that Georges St-Pierre won't fight Anderson Silva or Anderson Silva won't fight Georges St-Pierre? There's no way. Both guys would absolutely take that fight," White said.
The thought of the fight is that it would be a showdown at middleweight with GSP moving up from the 170-pound division to the 185-pound division.
"Well again, it's a fantasy fight so we'd have to see what happens and then we would have to start talking about that," White said when asked about whether or not the fight would be a catchweight fight.
But still, GSP has one hurdle left to clear, Shields, who last year beat Dan Henderson to retain the Strikeforce middleweight crown. Shields was counted out in that fight as well.
"Yeah, or maybe we're talking maybe the Okami fight does happen," White said when asked about if the Shields fight was the last thing that needed to happen before discussion began about the mega-fight.
Yushin Okami is the No. 1 contender in the middleweight division for Silva. Okami was promised a title shot last year after beating Nate Marquardt at UFC 122. Okami hasn't fought since that November fight, waiting for his shot at the title.
